In a world dominated by skepticism, academia, and humanistic rationalism, why would one of the sharpest minds of the internet age surrender to faith in Jesus Christ?

Larry Sanger, the cofounder of Wikipedia, spent 35 years as a skeptic—immersed in the world of philosophy, rationalism, and methodological doubt. He moved in circles that rejected Christianity, surrounded by intellectuals who dismissed faith as outdated and irrational. Yet today, he boldly confesses: “I am a Christian.”

This is not just another conversion story. It is a moment that should make everyone stop and think.

How does a man trained in philosophy, surrounded by atheists, and deeply skeptical of religious belief, come to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord?

The answer is profound—and it speaks to all who genuinely seek the truth.

The Journey from Skepticism to Faith

Larry Sanger’s story is one of deep intellectual struggle. As a child, he was raised in a Lutheran home, but his relentless questioning led him away from faith. He found no satisfying answers from religious leaders, who often brushed off his doubts. The silence of those who should have defended the truth only reinforced his skepticism.

By his late teens, he had fully embraced methodological skepticism—the idea that one should withhold belief until something can be known with certainty. He pursued philosophy at the highest levels, earning a Ph.D. in analytic philosophy, a field largely dominated by nonbelievers.

During this time, he viewed religion as something only unthinking or dogmatic people accepted. He saw faith as an obstacle to reason. But despite all his skepticism, something lingered—an awareness that he might not have given Christianity a fair evaluation.

The Slow Crumbling of Atheism

As Sanger grew older, he began to observe something troubling.

While outspoken atheists like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris loudly proclaimed that belief in God was irrational, their arguments lacked the depth and intellectual rigor he expected. They ridiculed Christianity rather than engaging with it seriously. Their followers, especially in online communities, often behaved with arrogance rather than reasoned argument.

At the same time, Sanger noticed that many of the most intelligent and thoughtful people he knew were Christians.

This contradiction troubled him. He had dismissed Christianity for decades—but had he really examined it fairly?

His journey back began in an unexpected way. He saw the increasing moral decay of the world, the collapse of ethical standards, and the growing influence of occultism among the powerful. He was disturbed by the rise of movements that openly embraced evil, often in direct opposition to biblical morality.

In 2019, he decided to do something radical: read the Bible cover to cover.

Finding Truth in the Word of God

For most of his life, Sanger assumed that the Bible was nothing more than ancient mythology. But as he read it with fresh eyes, something unexpected happened.

The Bible was not what he thought it was.

Instead of primitive superstition, he found deep coherence. Instead of contradictions, he found astonishing wisdom. The more he studied, the more he realized that he had never truly understood Christianity at all.

He examined the classic arguments for the existence of God—the cosmological argument, the fine-tuning argument, the moral argument—and found them far more compelling than he had before.

One by one, his old reasons for unbelief fell apart.

Eventually, he reached a turning point. Lying in bed one night, he finally admitted to himself:

“I believe in God.”

For a man who had built his entire worldview on skepticism, this was a radical shift. It was not emotional manipulation. It was not blind faith. It was the result of following the evidence—and the evidence led him to Jesus.

Why This Matters

Larry Sanger’s conversion is a warning to the skeptics of today.

For decades, the dominant narrative in secular education, mainstream media, and the scientific community has been that Christianity is irrational and outdated. Young minds are taught that faith is a crutch for the ignorant, that science has replaced God, and that morality can exist without a Creator.

But Sanger’s story exposes the lie.

A man trained in logic, who spent decades analyzing worldviews, who held every intellectual reason to reject Christianity—became a believer.

Why?

Because the truth is undeniable.

The heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1). The fine-tuning of the universe demands a Designer. The existence of absolute morality points to a Lawgiver. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most well-documented and consequential event in human history.

The real question is not whether God exists, but whether we are willing to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

A Challenge to the Skeptic

• Have you truly examined the claims of Christianity with an open mind?

If there’s one question that challenges believers and skeptics alike, it’s this: If God is good, why is there so much suffering?

Alex O’Connor raised this question in his latest critique of Christianity, and my friend and X Apologist, Darwin to Jesus, and I sat down to discuss it. We both agree — this is not just a philosophical question; it’s deeply personal. We all experience pain, loss, and injustice. But does the existence of suffering prove that God doesn’t exist? Or could it actually be evidence for Him?

The Atheist Assumption: Suffering Shouldn’t Exist

One of the core assumptions behind Alex’s argument is that a good and powerful God should eliminate all suffering. If He doesn’t, then either He’s not good, or He’s not powerful enough to stop it.

At first glance, that sounds like a strong case. But there’s a hidden assumption: that suffering is objectively bad.

Alex, like most people, sees suffering as something that shouldn’t exist. But where does this idea of “should” come from? If the universe is just a random collection of atoms with no ultimate purpose, then suffering is just an accident — neither good nor bad, just what happens. A purely materialistic worldview has no basis for saying that suffering is objectively wrong. It can say that suffering is unpleasant or inconvenient, but it can’t say that it’s evil.

Yet we all instinctively know that suffering is more than just an unfortunate reality — it’s a violation of how things ought to be. And that very intuition suggests that there is an objective moral standard — a standard that only makes sense if there’s a God who defines it.

Christianity Doesn’t Ignore Suffering — It Explains It

While atheism struggles to explain why suffering shouldn’t exist, Christianity takes suffering seriously. The Bible doesn’t sugarcoat reality — pain, evil, and injustice are everywhere. But rather than seeing suffering as meaningless, Christianity explains both why it exists and how it will ultimately be redeemed.

1. Suffering is the result of a broken world. The Bible teaches that suffering was not part of God’s original creation. Sin entered the world through human rebellion, and with it came pain, disease, and death (Romans 5:12). God didn’t create evil, but He allows human free will — and with that freedom came consequences.
2. God works through suffering. While we may not always understand why specific hardships happen, the Bible repeatedly shows that God brings good out of suffering. Joseph was betrayed and sold into slavery, yet God used it to save nations (Genesis 50:20). Paul endured beatings and imprisonment, yet his suffering advanced the Gospel (Philippians 1:12-14). Even in our own lives, pain often brings growth, refines character, and deepens dependence on God.
3. God entered into suffering Himself. Unlike the distant, impersonal gods of other religions, the Christian God stepped into human suffering. Jesus Christ — God in the flesh — experienced hunger, betrayal, torture, and death. He didn’t stay removed from our pain; He embraced it. Why? So that He could ultimately defeat it. The cross wasn’t the end of the story—His resurrection proved that suffering will not have the final word.

The Ultimate Hope: Suffering Will End

One of the biggest challenges to Alex’s argument is this: If you reject God because of suffering, what alternative do you have?

Atheism offers no ultimate comfort — no justice for the oppressed, no redemption for suffering, no final victory over evil. If suffering is just part of existence, then despair is the only logical response.

Christianity, on the other hand, offers something radically different: hope. The Bible promises that one day, suffering will end. Revelation 21:4 says, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” The Christian answer to suffering isn’t just an explanation — it’s a promise that it won’t last forever.

So, Does Suffering Disprove God?

Not only does suffering not disprove God, but it actually points to Him. The very fact that we recognize suffering as wrong, that we long for justice, and that we desire a world without pain — all of this aligns perfectly with what Christianity teaches.

Alex raises important questions, but his argument falls short. A world without God doesn’t eliminate suffering; it eliminates the very basis for calling suffering unjust in the first place. Only in Christ do we find an answer that doesn’t just explain suffering but redeems it.

Once Jesus was resurrected from the dead and later made several appearances to the early apostles, these men who once fled in fear for their lives from Jesus just days before he was crucified, became bold proclaimers of the gospel. These eleven former cowards not only were transformed into bold witnesses for Christ but were willing to suffer humiliation, torture, and even death for their resurrected Savior. The only rational explanation for this incredible change in behavior was the apostles sincere belief that Jesus was their Messiah who died on a cross and rose from the grave three days later.

As I have attempted to show in earlier devotions most biblical scholars, including the rather skeptical ones, accept the fact that Jesus was a real historical person, that Jesus died by crucifixion, that the tomb was empty, and that His disciples believed that he rose from the dead and appeared to them.

Sadly, those who don’t believe in the reality of the resurrection, which is the key doctrine on which Christianity either rises or falls, believe that the early disciples made up the entire Christian story and thus the story of what happened to Jesus is really based on a colossal lie. The question before us is simply this could the early apostles and disciples of Jesus have made up the entire gospel story including His resurrection from the dead.

Since we know from early independent extrabiblical sources, both Christian and non-Christian, that many of Jesus’ apostles and early disciples suffered intense persecution and even death for preaching that Jesus was Lord and had risen from the dead, I find it highly unlikely that they made up this elaborate lie.

Consider the following lines of reasoning:

Peter Kreeft said it well when he commented: “Why would the apostles lie? Liars always lie for selfish reasons. If they lied, what was their motive, what did they get out of it? What they got out of it was misunderstanding, rejection, persecution, torture, and martyrdom. Hardly a list of perks!”1

We know that Muslim terrorists are willing to die for Allah today – September 11 proved that. Thus, it is true that some will die for a false cause that they believe in. However, if Christ’s earlier followers were willing to be martyrs for a known lie – that’s insanity.

What would be the motivation for the early disciples to lie? What benefits could they receive? Normally we lie to get out of trouble or gain some benefit. But the disciples by lying got into trouble. As I stated earlier what they received was humiliation, persecution, torture, and death. I can’t believe that they would make up a lie in order to bring on all the suffering they often knew they would receive.

Again, Josh McDowell offers us something to really think about when he stated: “If the Resurrection had not happened, obviously the disciples would have known it. I can find no way that these particular men could have been deceived. Therefore, they not only would have died for a lie—here’s the catch—they would have known it was a lie. It would be hard to find a group of men anywhere in history who would die for a lie if they knew it was a lie.”2

Atheists are quick to try to poke holes in the above logic but for what purpose? If they were to succeed, what could they hope to gain? You see the atheist must indeed lead a lonely life since he does not believe in a divine Creator. By definition they must believe that they have no soul and no immortality. Since they came into existence by chance, and not divine design, any meaning they find in life is but a by-product of random occurrences. Even the great mysteries of our universe that cause us to ponder just who we are and why we are here, are a closed corridor of thought, to those who place God as something that exists only in one’s imagination.

If the atheist can show that the disciples were lying and the whole Christian story is a fabrication, then he must conclude that he came into existence from nothing and when he dies he will go back to nothing. And somehow in between these two states of nothingness he is supposed to find meaning in life!

Since the atheist has no god to believe in he places himself as the supreme person in his universe and spends the rest of his life searching for a reason for his existence. Searching every pathway, every byway, overturning every stone, examining every philosophy, and experiencing every feeling, as he comes to the end of his journey, the answer he finds is that none exists!

Christianity offers us the peace and joy that come with living a life for Christ; not to mention eternal life when we die. What does the life of an atheist offer its followers but a life of no meaning, no accountability, and no hope for a life to come. And in the last analysis if there is no God then the atheist can enjoy his sin since he doesn’t have to worry about being accountable to a holy God. Thus, he can do what is right in his own eyes. So, who would die for a lie? The Christian is betting his eternal destiny on Jesus. The atheist if he is right loses big time. My friends I know that Jesus is who He says He is because He transformed my life. Jesus is no lie – He is the way, the truth, and the life!

Why does an intelligent Creator make more sense than blind random chance? Or does it? Which takes more faith to believe in – creation or evolution? If Darwin knew how complex the human cell was do you think it may have changed his views on evolution? And since when does a mindless molecule have creative powers? These are all important questions to ask in the creation vs evolution debate.

Does the Bible have a better explanation on the question of the origin of the universe and man? The question must now be asked: How did our universe come into being and where did the first human cell obtain such a seemingly limitless treasure chest of knowledge?

Evolutionists tells us that our great-great-great-etc. ancestors were the chance collision of molecules; that these molecules over vast periods of time somehow began to link themselves into primitive single-cell creatures; that they in turn, over more eons, formed more complex organisms, and on and on it went. Could blind chance have created such incredible magnificence? Could random collisions have created genius? And could mindless matter have generated the marvelous minds we possess today?

The Bible has some other thoughts on this matter. We read in the very first chapter, in the very first verse of the Bible, the following words: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1). We also read in: (Psalm 139:13): “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

It is clearly stated in this ancient book that God created the universe and He made you. The Bible has much to say about the creative powers of God and how much He loves His creation. It’s funny how we are so quick to accept science and its, belief in evolution, as the definitive truth on all matters, and dismiss the Bible as a book of “old sayings” for “old people.” Yet if we take any science textbook written 100 years ago, whether it be on biology, astronomy or chemistry, the best we can say is that there is much in its entertainment value but little in its scientific value. This is because, in light of present-day knowledge, a great deal of the information they contain is in error.

The Bible, however, was written and completed almost 2,000 years ago, and has not undergone any revisions since then. The evolutionist can offer us little help in discovering the deep things about ourselves. From that viewpoint we are nothing more than a chance speck in our vast and eternal universe. But as we begin to examine what God, through His vehicle the Bible, has to say, I believe you will agree that you are indeed extraordinary and here by design.

In the final analysis the question of origins must be accepted on faith since we can’t use the scientific method to prove how it happened. Which faith makes more sense – biblical or that of the evolutionist?

The Bible says: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” (Hebrews 11:3).

Evolutionary faith quickly runs into problems in trying to explain origins. They contend that we evolved from simpler life forms, which over great expanses of time became more and more complex until humanity came about. They, however, can offer us no clues, as to where the original inanimate matter came from. Scientific theories such as the Big Bang bring us a little closer to the ultimate beginning of the universe. They, at least, postulate that somehow there was some sort of matter in existence, before it became everything. But, on logical grounds alone, the Bible goes the final step by acknowledging “that what is seen (our universe) was not made out of what was visible.” In other words, there was nothing there to start with except God.

But to have made a universe of such incredible size, amazing complexity, perfect orderliness, fabulous mysteries, and awesome beauty would have required a force of indescribable creative genius, possessing unlimited power and intellect that no finite mind (such as we possess) could ever completely fathom. The above description basically defines the God of the Bible, who created the stars, planets, mountains, trees, animals and, yes, you and me. You are clearly here because God created you—not by chance, but by deliberate design.

The psalmist’s faith allows him to beautifully describe the creation process when he proclaims: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:13-16).

For the evolutionist his faith is truly monumental to believe that nothing by itself could create everything.

The name of Ignaz Semmelweis may be unfamiliar to many, but he is a perfect example of why not only is dissent within science healthy but it can literally be a matter of life and death. As I read the following statement the name of Ignaz Semmelweis kept coming to mind: “The history of science is replete with examples of novel ideas which were given birth when scientists realized that the empirical data conflicted with reigning paradigms. Scientists who observe data that conflicts with popular scientific paradigms form innovative theories to explain the new data. Scientists propounding these new theories often experience sharp opposition from their peers. It is crucial that advocates of the new scientific theories be granted freedom of inquiry to question reigning scientific ideas if scientific progress is to be possible.”1

Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician (1818 – 1865) who was quite interested in a very puzzling disease called childbed fever. According to research I did for a book I wrote called The Challenge, the story goes as follows:

“In his research, Semmelweis observed that many women bearing children in the hospitals of Vienna, where the best-educated doctors could be found, died of very high fevers shortly after giving birth. He also observed that women bearing children at home, with the help of uneducated midwives, rarely died. He determined that the doctors were the ones responsible for the spreading of the disease. It was common practice back then for a doctor to be working in the dissecting room and immediately afterward, move to the delivery room without carefully cleaning his hands. Semmelweis, in 1847, began forcing the doctors under his charge to wash their hands in strong chemicals before touching any patients. Many of these highly qualified doctors flatly refused to wash their hands and resented being thought the cause of spreading the disease. It became a question of pride. When the doctors washed their hands, the childbed fever rate went down. When they didn’t, needless lives were lost. This was truly a black day for modern medicine.”2

I believe that in the above case, the doctors knew that they were wrong, but their pride caused them to hide and suppress the truth. Fast forward to today. I believe that many scientists know, in their hearts, that our universe is just too darn complex to be here without the work of a master designer. Yet, to admit this, would mean that they might just have to abandon their long-standing paradigm of Darwinian evolution. Like Semmelweis, the creation account, has an uphill battle to gain acceptance among many scientists. Hopefully, as more scientists today open their minds, to allow a supernatural explanation of our universe to have its day in court, it may one day dethrone Darwinian evolution as the reigning paradigm explaining the origin of life.

One of the greatest arguments for the existence of God is the human cell. Science is just beginning to unlock some of the mysteries of the cell but these tiny entities, possessing no intelligence, can perform amazingly complex functions in mere nanoseconds that leave our brightest scientists baffled as to their inner workings.

When you were conceived you started your journey in life as a single cell. By the time nine months passed, your original cell at the point of birth had multiplied by a factor of thirty trillion. While science can name the different parts of each type of cell as well as understand something of cellular duplication, it is at a complete loss to describe how your one original cell knew how to form  heart cells and brain cells. Just listen to how apologist Frank Turek describes this amazing mystery: “As if they had minds of their own, your new cells-some of them eventually reproducing in the womb at a rate of more than 100,000 per second-knew where to go and what to do in order to become each of your major organs. How did certain cells “know” to become heart cells, while others “knew” to become brain cells? There is no known material explanation for their goal-directedness.”1

If this were not mysterious enough an even more unfathomable mystery seems to indicate that each cell has foreknowledge of the future. Let me explain. You see your original single cell back at conception not only had an almost limitless amount of knowledge, since it must have been pre-programmed with everything needed to create all thirty trillion of your cells by birth, but also the blueprints to orchestrate the creation of all of your organs and body parts.

But here is where the magic really takes place for you see your original single cell had to know that at a future point in time certain unknown substances, i.e., the nutrients from your mother, would have to be broken down and reformatted into useful tiny substances that could generate the cell multiplication process. Not only that, but the DNA in your cells had to have an incredible storehouse of complex bio-chemical knowledge to orchestrate this entire process. And the only way that your original single cell could be coded with the instructions to perform these incredibly complicated processes on certain unknown future substances is if that cell had foreknowledge. And the only way it could have this foreknowledge is if there is a God who placed it there.

I believe that the more an open-minded scientist examines these mysteries the more he will realize that the evolutionary mantra of nobody times nothing equals everything is a vastly inferior explanation to the origin of life question than the simple biblical statement: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1).

We often hear that America is a country built on Judeo-Christian principles. Looking around today however, we often cannot see where these principles went and how the government devolved to the immoral and often corrupt establishment that we know it to be today. We have moved from John Adams describing how the Constitution was written for a moral people to now living in a society where abortion and sexual perversion are accepted as commonplace and even hailed as “rights within the Constitution.” How did we get here?

These questions are important, so I invited my friend and Professor of Law, John Eidsmoe, to the Creation Today Show this week to discuss “Justice Through the Ages,” and what the Founding Fathers originally intended for this country. According to Mr. Eidsmoe, one of the key issues surrounding the political decline of America is the idea of a “living Constitution.” This concept describes a document and rights that evolve with time and change according to societal standards of the day. However, the Founding Fathers specifically wrote this important document to outline rights for everyone for all time. The rights enumerated in the Constitution are not up for debate. Once they are, we have walked ourselves into some serious trouble.

Not only does Mr. Eidsmoe explain the danger of a living Constitution, but he also outlines the reasons why the Founding Fathers set up our country and government the way they did. Now all you fans of alliteration out there get ready, because he calls it the “Founding Fathers’ Five-Fold Formula for Freedom.” Yes, my staff was also loving it! I’m not going to spoil all five points for you, but I do want to touch on the final point – responsibility through religion. 

According to Mr. Eidsmoe, the responsibility required to make the American government and freedom to operate properly comes from upstanding moral character. Thus, the more immoral a society becomes, the more government control the society requires. What a sobering thought! If we want to return to the freedom the Founding Fathers originally intended for our country, we must return to the morality they upheld from the beginning. We need a revival!

There is so much interesting and pertinent information in this conversation, and you don’t want to miss it! What is faith? You may have heard the “Christian speak” of “just have faith,” or “step out in faith.” But neither of those terms really give us a good idea of what faith ACTUALLY is! He started out by telling us what faith ISN’T. Faith isn’t putting words in God’s mouth and then being upset when things don’t happen according to those words. That’s definitely not it.

What faith IS, however, is having a confident trust in a reliable source that leads to obedience. Now you may be wondering, “So if faith is trust, why is it that we can trust God?” And that, my friend, is an excellent question! And Bub has an answer for that too! He calls it, “The C’s and the TION’s.” Stick with me here!

I will leave the in-depth explanation to Bub, but here’s the quick rundown of this concept:

God reveals His Character through Revelation. 

God reveals His Care through Incarnation.

God reveals His Capabilities through Creation. 

These C’s and TION’s give us ample reason to trust (have faith) in God. And Bub has some incredible insights and personal testimony to share about what this looks like practically. You don’t want to miss it!

We are seeing a crisis in the church today. 75% of teens are walking away from church and the faith. Why? Why are we losing so many of our teens? According to my friend and Reasons for Hope speaker, Dave Glander, it’s because we never truly had those teens to begin with.

Mr. Glander explains how the emphasis in church has sadly been on an emotional experience with Christ rather than a genuine salvific encounter with Him. This is not what our kids need! Mr. Glander runs youth camps all summer, and he says that teens DO care and are starving for truth! So why are we withholding it from them? These kids are bombarded with worldviews that are anti-God, anti-Christianity, and anti-Bible. They desperately need to be discipled! And that’s exactly what Mr. Glander is all about.

In order to reach the 75% of kids who do walk away, we need to know what keeps the 25% around. According to Mr. Glander, things like quality family time, serving God together, and intentionally entrusting kids with responsibility from a young age have all played a role in developing children who cling to a strong faith throughout adulthood. These action steps are vital if we want to see the 75% come to genuinely know Christ personally.

Over the last 2,000 years no book has come under more scrutiny than the Bible. Over the centuries men have tried their best to get rid of the Bible. But today the Bible can boast that it has sold more copies than any other book ever written. It has also been given away for free to more people than any other book ever printed. And finally, the Bible has caused more people to be burned at the stake, brought before firing squads, sent to prison, beheaded, stoned, sawn in two, subjected to scourgings, mocked, and made a public spectacle of  than any other book known to man.

And the more people have attempted to disprove the veracity of the Bible, the more it has proven to be a book of timeless truth. Attacks from history, archaeology, science, and philosophy have failed to disprove the accuracy of the Bible. So-called scholars have used their intellect to find flaws in the Bible, and they too have failed. And no book has been banned from being read than the Bible but yet it continues to find a way to reach the hearts of all who sincerely attempt to find the truth about life.

My friends since the Bible is a book of absolute truth, was written by the hand of God, and boasts it will last forever as we read in (Isaiah 40:8): “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever,” we can be confident that no amount of pressure by man to stamp out this one amazing book will ever succeed. You see truth can be denied, suppressed, and hidden, but can never be eliminated or overturned. (Proverbs 12:19 TLB) expresses this thought well when it says: “Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed.”

May the following quotes help give you a flavor for the attacks the Bible has had to endure on its veracity and its amazing ability to survive:

“Infidels of eighteen hundred years have been refuting and overthrowing this book, and yet it stands today as solid rock. Its circulation increases, and it is more loved and cherished and read today than ever before. Infidels, with all their assaults, make about as much impression on this book as a man with a tack hammer would on the Pyramids of Egypt.

“When the French monarch proposed the persecution of Christians in his dominion, an old statesman and warrior said to him, ‘Sire, the church of God is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.’ So, the hammers of infidels have been pecking away at this book for ages, but the hammers are worn out, and the anvil still endures. We often look up at the heavens and stare in awe and wonder at the glory of God. And for good reason! Psalm 19:1 tells us that, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” But what if we were to switch perspectives? What if we could look down from the heavens and gaze upon the beauty of Earth? What would we see?

That question is one that is so wonderfully answered by Col. Jeff Williams, a NASA astronaut who played a key role in the design, construction, and operation of the International Space Station. After spending over five hundred days in space, he has shared countless photos, videos, and talks about the incredible creativity and precision in the design of Creation, but from a different view entirely! What did he see from heaven’s perspective?

Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this conversation proves just how true that is! From images of the Grand Canyon to New York City, Col. Williams shows the intricate beauty of Creation that we often miss from the ground. We can see the sunrises and sunsets; the waterfalls and the mountain ranges, but we don’t often get to witness the complexity of the very ground we walk on. 

But what is the point of sharing these incredible images and videos besides staring in awe at the genius of Creator God? According to Col. Williams, these pictures are incredible apologetic tools to use as we witness to others and share the majesty of our great God. They are truly a perfect example of the rocks crying out! So take some time this week to listen to the genius of Col. Williams and allow his stories and experience to encourage you to share your faith with someone.

Music is such an integral part of our lives. It is important in so many ways. According to my guest on the Creation Today show this week, Ben Everson, if it wasn’t so important, there wouldn’t be so many arguments about it! And these arguments are exactly why I knew that we had to have a show about “Why Music Matters to God” and what He says about it in His Word!

Thankfully, Ben is a good friend of mine and was willing to have a conversation with me about what he refers to as “the four quadrants of music.” So instead of just defining music as either sacred (Christian) or secular, he explains how music can be divided into one of the four categories based on purpose, style, lyrics, intent, etc. This method of understanding music causes us to stop and be more intentional about the songs we listen to. Instead of just automatically categorizing music into Christian (so we can listen to it) and secular (so we can’t listen to it), we can learn to take up our cross daily to seek fellowship with God so He can grant us discernment.

Ultimately, we know that music is part of God’s essence. Ben explains how in Zephaniah 3:17, God rejoices over us with singing. If God is singing, that must mean that music holds a level of importance to Him. And if it’s important to God, it should be important to us! That’s why it is so vital that we understand how we as Christians are supposed to view music. It serves many purposes and we must determine how to use the songs we listen to in a way that glorifies God. Because music is part of who He is, we can use music as a way to know Him better!

The year was 1802 and William Paley famously gave us the watchmaker analogy. In his analogy Paley wrote that if a pocket watch is found on the ground, we can infer that someone dropped it there and that it was made by a watchmaker, not by natural forces. In his 1802 book, Natural Theology, Paley shares his now famous analogy as follows:

“In crossing a heath, suppose I pitched my foot against a stone, and were asked how the stone came to be there; I might possibly answer, that, for anything I knew to the contrary, it had lain there forever: nor would it perhaps be very easy to show the absurdity of this answer. But suppose I had found a watch upon the ground, and it should be inquired how the watch happened to be in that place; I should hardly think of the answer I had before given, that for anything I knew, the watch might have always been there. … There must have existed, at some time, and at some place or other, an artificer or artificers, who formed [the watch] for the purpose which we find it actually to answer; who comprehended its construction, and designed its use. … Every indication of contrivance, every manifestation of design, which existed in the watch, exists in the works of nature; with the difference, on the side of nature, of being greater or more, and that in a degree which exceeds all computation.”¹

Fast forward to the year 1859 and Charles Darwin pens his famous book, The Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection. In his book he knew quite abit about finch beaks but his knowledge of the human cell was just about zero. To Darwin the human cell was nothing more than a clump of protoplasm.

Fast forward again to the year 1996 and biochemist, Michael Behe, shares his insights on the human cell in his seminal work, Darwin’s Black Box. In this book Behe shares that life is based on “molecular machines.” Behe gives us a wonderful snapshot of what these molecular machines do:

“Molecular machines haul cargo from one place in the cell to another along ‘highways’ made of other molecules, while still others act as cables, ropes, and pulleys to hold the cell in shape. Machines turn cellular switches on and off, sometimes killing the cell or causing it to grow. Solar-powered machines capture the energy of photons and store it in chemicals. Electrical machines allow current to flow through nerves. Manufacturing machines build other molecular machines, as well as themselves. Cells swim using machines, copy themselves with machinery, ingest food with machinery. In short, highly sophisticated molecular machines control every cellular process. Thus, the details of life are finely calibrated, and the machinery of life enormously complex.”²

If we compare these two types of machines, Paley’s watch, and Behe’s molecular machines, several things will surface. First, the watch monitors time in intervals of seconds while molecular machine perform functions in nanoseconds. Second, Paley’s watch is made of a relatively small amount of metal and plastic parts, while Behe’s molecular machines are made of an amazing number of proteins molecules. Third, a watch is made of inanimate matter while molecular machines are made of living matter. Fourth, watches can’t self-repair themselves while molecular machines can. Fifth, when you assemble a lot of watches you just get a lot of timepieces. But when you assemble a lot of molecular machines, on the order of many trillions, they combine in an unfathomably complex way to create a watchmaker – i.e., a human being. Sixth, while a watch is complex, molecular machine are irreducibly complex. And seventh, a watch requires a skilled watchmaker, while an infinitely more complex molecular machine requires the Father of time and Creator of the universe to come into existence!

If Charles Darwin could only have studied Behe’s molecular machines, instead of finch beaks, I just wonder what conclusions he would have come up with. All a watch can do is keep time. But when you were first conceived, that original single egg cell, had so much vast knowledge that in nine-months’ time it would create a thirty trillion cell masterpiece created in the image of God, called you!

Quarks, bosons, and leptons. Yep, you read that right. Those are just a few of the terms we cover in this week’s fascinating Creation Today show, “Quantum Physics.” I know, I know, try to contain your excitement!

But seriously, this show is amazing! Dr. Jason Lisle joined me to discuss how things behave at the quantum level. The science of it requires a bit of extra focus, but once you start to catch on, you’ll see just how incredible our God is! His creativity in design is truly unmatched!

For example, Dr. Lisle explains how quantum physics and quantum mechanics are so specific and consistent that scientists have mathematically proven the existence of certain particles before actually knowing that those particles needed to exist! The math lines up so perfectly that scientists knew things wouldn’t operate correctly without another particle. That’s such a unique factor in science. You don’t see that in any other field of study.

Dr. Lisle also explained the mind-blowing fact of how light behaves at the quantum level. If you’ve ever heard the debate of if light is a particle or a wave, then you’re going to want to hear this explanation. I won’t try to explain it all as succinctly as Dr. Lisle, but, SPOILER ALERT, light behaves differently depending on if you’re observing it or not! When we are not looking at it, it will behave like a wave, but once we look at it – BOOM! Particle! Crazy, right?

There is so much more I could talk about from this show, but I’ll leave it up to the expert. You’re gonna want to bring your pen and notebook to this conversation because it gets a little intense at times, but the scientific knowledge of the genius of Creator God is SO worth it!

As I flew back to Pensacola finishing two days of filming at Answers In Genesis Ark Encounter for the next film in our museum series, I received the sorrowful news that our friend and Answers In Genesis legend, Buddy Davis, went home to be with his Savior.

While he never desired earthly fame, Buddy certainly is a legend. His music, dinosaurs, love for people, and love for his Creator made Buddy a man that people wanted to know.

As we mourn the loss of this incredibly influential figure in the Creation Community, please pray for his wife, Kay. She has spent a lifetime with a man that she will indeed miss very much. Pray that through the sorrow, God will place perfectly timed reminders of their beautiful impact on countless lives over the years.

The Davis Family has been a great blessing to me. Buddy was always encouraging me in ministry, sharing that he loved the work that we do here at Creation Today. He loves seeing the next generation engage with apologetics.

When it comes to apologetics and Christianity, as you might remember from a previous devotion, the claims of Christianity are subject to testability. In fact, the Christian religion not only allows us to test it historically but encourages us to examine it closely as to its veracity. And that’s what apologetics is all about – this field of study offers many defenses to the truthfulness of the Bible. Whether you choose to examine the Scriptures from history, science, philosophy, ethics or just about any other field the Bible and the Christian faith stand head and shoulders above all other religions as the most unique, influential, and intellectually compelling belief system around.

For example, the field of archaeology has proven literally hundreds of biblical accounts to be true. When one looks at the Book of Mormon there is absolutely no archaeological evidence to support any of its historical claims.

When it comes to prophecy there is no religion extant in the world with one viable, believable, verifiable prophecy except Christianity. One of the greatest proofs of the truthfulness of the Bible is fulfilled prophecy. It is staggering in its amount. It is extra-Biblical in its verification. For example, the Bible talks about and prophesizes the fate of many biblical cities. The Bible predicts the fate of Nineveh, Babylon, and Samaria in stunning detail hundreds of years before their falls; and with exacting accuracy. And when it comes to Jesus, the Old Testament has dozens and dozens of prophecies that are fulfilled in the New Testament.

And in the field of science the Bible makes numerous scientific claims hundreds and sometimes thousands of years before scientists were able to verify them. Many of my previous devotions have shared some of these fascinating biblical scientific discussions. This is clearly not the case in other religions. As John MacArthur states:

“Take, for example, the sacred writings of the Hindus. They contain such fantastic nonsense as this: ‘The moon is 50,000 leagues higher than the sun and shines by its own light. Night is caused by the sun setting behind a huge mountain several thousand feet high located in the center of the earth. This world is flat and triangular and is composed of seven stages; one of honey, another of sugar, a third of butter, and still another of wine. And the whole mass is borne on the heads of countless elephants which, in shaking, produce earthquakes.’ That’s ridiculous.”1

We could list many more amazing facts that provide ample evidence that a serious, open minded non-believer should consider when examining the Christian faith. But sadly, many people are too busy living for the moment, not concerned with spiritual matters, are closed minded, or enjoy their sin too much to want to examine Christianity. For this large segment of the seven-plus billion inhabitants of our planet apologetics is not enough to move the spiritual dial for these folks. And that’s where fervent prayer, in addition to apologetics, is needed.

For this segment of individuals, it is of paramount importance that when we share the genius of the Bible we don’t forget to pray for them, that God would lift the spiritual blinders from their eyes. For while apologetics reached the mind, prayer touches the heart – and this combination of prayer and apologetics is sheer dynamite.

While I believe that apologetics is mostly to help fortify the faith of the Christian it also can play a powerful role in opening the mind of the non-believer to at least consider the Christian faith. But even to the hard of heart, apologetics can at least provide these individuals with food for thought when their hearts become open – and that’s where prayer comes in. You see sometimes the only thing we can do for some people is to bathe them in prayer to soften their hearts. Then when they reflect back on some apologetic teaching they have heard the light may go on and bring a compelling argument to bear, not just to their mind but in their heart.

So, the next time you share an apologetic argument don’t forget to pray for that person. Apologetics can jar the mind but prayer can open the heart. And in the last analysis both mind and heart need to assent in order for a person to become a true child of God.

But let’s reevaluate the situation when we look at it through the lens of God and His Word. The truth is that we ALL are going to struggle. But if your worldview does not include abundant resources to deal with suffering, your Christianity is bankrupt. According to the Bible, the struggles and suffering of this life serve to grow and strengthen our identity in Christ and push us to worship the One True King. And not only that, but the Bible gives us resources to deal with suffering. We can cast our burdens on Christ. We can pray for His peace and seek His wisdom. We can go continually to the Father in prayer. 

There’s so much more truth packed inside this conversation, and you don’t want to miss any of it! You will be convicted, humbled, and encouraged to pursue Christ in a new way through this conversation. So be sure to schedule some time into your week to listen to this incredible conversation.

When it comes to knowing right from wrong the big question is can we ever know for sure if there are absolute standards for determining this or are right and wrong relative and to be determined by each individual for themselves. Fortunately for the Christian we are not left in the dark on this question because God has given us His holy word, the Bible, as our perfect guide to knowing his absolute standards for right and wrong.

Francis Schaeffer provides insight on this whole issue when he stated: “The moral absolutes rest upon God’s character. The moral commands He has given to men are an expression of His character. Men as created in His image are to live by choice on the basis of what God is. The standards of morality are determined by what conforms to His character, while those things which do not conform are immoral.”1

Since God created the universe, is always good, and His nature and character are perfect, we should expect His standards of morality to be absolutely trustworthy for all people and for all ages. I don’t know about you but I am so grateful that we can know right from wrong by simply reading the Bible and trusting God to never lead us astray. While the world’s standards on morality often depend on popular opinion, expediency, and what feels good, we as Christians base our morality on the unerring word of God. As a result our issue as believers is not knowing right from wrong, but are we willing to conform to God’s perfect standards and obey his commandments to do right and shun wrong.

William Penn also provides us with his sage advice when he remarked: “Right is right, even if everyone is against it; and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it.”2

In a world where morality is relative, where wrong is often considered right, and where sin abounds, it is so comforting to have a book like the Bible which always has our best interests at heart and gives us timeless advice that when followed will bring great peace and joy to our hearts and greatly please our Lord!

Maybe you, like many others, have felt paralyzed with fears about rejection, embarrassment, or not knowing the right answers. Witnessing can be overwhelming at times, but how do we overcome that so we can fulfill the Great Commission?

These are all such important questions, so I was thrilled to invite Eddie Roman from Living Waters onto the Creation Today Show this week to talk about “The Mind of the Christian.” It makes such a huge difference in evangelism when we understand the mindset behind it! Plus, Mr. Roman is such a fantastic communicator, and he brings truth after powerful truth from the very beginning of this show all the way to the end. 

Mr. Roman explains how we must understand how God looks at the lost and align our thinking to that. According to Scripture, the lost are children of wrath, blinded, and held captive by Satan. These descriptions should be a wake up call for all believers! This is not a battle for the mind, but a battle for the heart. Only God can change a heart, so we do not have to approach evangelism as if the burden is all on us. God calls us to be ready to give an answer, but we still must be humble, patient, and realize that ultimately, God is in control and He will bring the increase.

What has happened in America? There is so much debate surrounding government and the role of politics in our lives. And it can all get so overwhelming! But if we look back through history and observe how government and society have interacted, we can see how vitally important it is for us to stand up and make our voices heard!

 This topic called for a passionate and educated expert, so I knew I had to invite my friend William Federer onto the Creation Today Show to talk all about “How to be a Christian Citizen.” And I was not disappointed! In fact, we ended the show with so many of us feeling so convicted and ready to share these truths with others in our lives. So get ready because this is a conversation for the memory books!

Mr. Federer explains how we live in a republic, not a monarchy. Why is this distinction important? Well, in a monarchy, subjects submit to a king; but in a republic, citizens ARE the king! In fact, the word citizen literally means “co-king.” If we are co-kings in this country, why wouldn’t we get involved in government and the politics of our nation? We have a responsibility to leave a good inheritance to our children, and we cannot do that if we remain silent on these issues.

In fact, Mr. Federer writes about this very thing in his newest book, Silence Equals Consent – the sin of omission: Speak Now or Forever Lose Your Freedom. If we as Christians know the evils in our communities and remain silent, we are an accessory to those evils. It is called the “rule of tacit admission.” Wow. What a powerful thought. 

So my challenge to you is: think about how you can be involved in leaving a good inheritance for your children. Will you remain silent and consenting to the trajectory we are on now, or will you stand boldly for truth as the fate of the world hangs in the balance? YOU are the key to turning things around!

The political climate today centers around unrest. Unrest in Ukraine. Unrest in Congress. Unrest in cities. And definitely unrest in Israel. What should the Christian response be to such unrest? Are we called to unequivocally support Israel? Or is there another course of action we are called to take?

So many questions call for a conversation with a great friend of mine who knows a lot of answers! That’s exactly why I invited Dr. Nathan Jones of Lamb & Lion Ministries to share the history of Israel and the conflict with Palestine while also encouraging us in the Christian response to it all. Dr. Jones plays the role of mythbuster as he provides critical information surrounding seven popular myths about Israel, the Jewish people, and those who support them. Abortion. It’s a controversial topic. With so many arguments constantly being thrown around, it’s difficult to cut through them all and get to the foundation of the debate – is abortion ever morally acceptable? The answer determines so much about how we approach the abortion industry, adoption, foster care, contraception, prenatal care, and other political topics. With such a significant topic at hand, I knew I needed to talk to a well-studied expert in the field, which is why I invited the Pro Life Doc, Dr. William Lile, to the Creation Today Show.

Now, you might want to hold onto your hats because Dr. Lile wasted no time in cutting to the root of the issue. Abortion is demonic. It’s child sacrifice and is the result of a spiritual, Satanic attack. Whew. You may be wondering…why does he use such strong language? It’s because the abortion industry profits off of the murder of innocent life, the selling of baby “parts,” the coercion of vulnerable mothers, and the sacrifice of children on the altar of convenience. If that’s not demonic, then I’m not sure what is!

But this show wasn’t solely a discussion of the evils of abortion, but also of the great medical advancements used to save the lives of mothers and their babies daily! Dr. Lile discusses how doctors are able to deliver babies early and keep them alive through life-saving technologies used in NICUs in hospitals throughout the country. Ethical IVF practices make embryo adoption possible so couples can raise those children. It is all so encouraging!

Could monkeys type one line of a Shakespearean play? It’s an interesting question for sure, and actually plays an important role in our understanding of the probability of the evolutionary process. If you’re wondering how those two things relate, you’ll definitely want to check out this week’s Creation Today Show with one of our partners, engineer Jim Hoff!

This show has so much science and math, but it’s incredible and Mr. Hoff makes it relatively simple to understand. But I found a great article that explains the experiment we conducted. “Within any given alphabet of x possible characters (where each character has an equal chance of occurring), the probability of any one of the characters occurring is 1 chance in x. For instance, if a monkey could bang randomly on a simplified typewriter possessing only keys for the 26 English letters, and assuming he was a perfectly random little monkey, there would be 1 chance in 26 that he would hit any particular letter at any particular moment.

The ‘famous’ atheist Richard Dawkins wrote “I don’t know who first pointed out that, given enough time, a monkey bashing away at random on a typewriter could produce all the works of Shakespeare.”  The idea originated with French mathematician Émile Borel, who pointed out in 1913 how unlikely it would be that a million monkeys typing ten hours a day would produce exactly all the books in the world’s libraries. Borel used this to illustrate the extreme unlikelihood of certain events, but Darwinists such as Dawkins now use the image of typing monkeys to illustrate the opposite: the likelihood that random processes can produce information.  According to the “infinite monkey theorem,” an infinite number of typing monkeys (or a finite number of monkeys typing for an infinite time) will eventually produce the works of William Shakespeare.

In theory, an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite amount of time would write the works of Shakespeare—mixed in with an infinite amount of utter nonsense.  But the real world isn’t infinite. On July 1, 2003, a Monkey Shakespeare Simulator was posted on the Internet. 

The simulator does not use real monkeys, of course; it is a computerized random letter generator in which each “monkey” types one letter per second and the number of monkeys is continually increasing.  The simulator compares its output with the works of Shakespeare and reports matches—though it waits for such matches to appear on their own instead of selecting for a target sequence, as Dawkins’ did in a simplified program he wrote. After a year and a half, the longest match produced by the Monkey Shakespeare Simulator was twenty-four letters from a line in The Second Part of King Henry IV, which took the equivalent of 2,738 trillion trillion trillion monkey-years to produce. (A year later, the record had been extended to over thirty letters, which took trillions and trillions more monkey-years to produce.)

The poster believes that along about say 1,502 trillion, trillion 768 billion, 532 million, 456 thousand two hundred and one time a monkey actually typed something worthy of Shakespeare and the rest since then has been useless typing. If you want to believe that, then please get in touch with me, I have some sea front property in Yuma, AZ I would like to sell.

I believe I have shown that not only is it IMPOSSIBLE for the monkeys to type anything remotely similar to a Shakespeare sonnet, it is also completely IMPROBABLE.  However, one can always hope that anything is possible…

Or let us take another approach: This has a somewhat comical appeal to me, is that of a blind monkey typing. Suppose that, instead of 26 letters plus spaces and punctuation in our English alphabet, there are only 20 possible choices for the monkey for each keystroke. We’ll use 20 because that’s the number of different kinds of amino acids our cells link together to make proteins (for now, we’ll ignore substitutions of amino acids; the math is so overpowering it works either way, and some proteins allow little or no substitution). We can compare the odds of a monkey accidentally typing a specified sequence of letters with the odds of the accidental formation of a specified sequence of amino acids.

Here’s a line from Shakespeare: “What fools these mortals be.” It has a total of 27 letters/spaces. How likely is it that a monkey will accidentally type this exact sequence?  Again, we assume the monkey has a choice of exactly 20 letters/ spaces for each keystroke and is equally likely to type, completely at random, any particular letter/ space in any position. Of course, our blind monkey could get lucky and type this exact sequence the very first time.  But what are the odds?

Because there are 27 letters/spaces, the number of possible sequences of this length is 2027, or about 1035. The number of seconds in the history of the universe, since the big bang, is about 4 × 1017.  So, even if we have a billion (109) quick-typing monkeys, who type the entire 27 characters every single second since the beginning of the universe (obviously this is fanciful, the monkeys couldn’t have existed at the beginning of the universe, but we are just trying to get a sense of the magnitude of the problem), we “only” get a total of 4 × 1026 sequences, and the chance that any of these monkeys ever typed “what fools these mortals be” is about 1 in 250 million (because 1035 is about 250 million times bigger than 4 × 1026).

So the odds of accidentally forming a precise sequence of 27 amino acids are laughingly small. Let’s now expand our imaginations to assume that every star in the universe has a planet with 1 billion monkeys typing. If we use a large estimate for the number of stars in the universe, we can expect that one of these monkeys will type “what fools these mortals be” within about 10 seconds.

But that’s just the beginning of complexity. Now let’s estimate the odds of accidentally creating a specified string of 75 amino acids. There are 75 letter/ spaces in “What a piece of work is a man how noble in reason how infinite in faculties.” There are a total of 2075 or about 4 × 1097 amino acid sequences of this length. Suppose, instead of a mere billion monkeys, each star in the universe has a planet with a billion billion billion billion monkeys, or 1036 monkeys, and each monkey can type even this 75 letters/ spaces sequence in just 1 second, to keep it simple. OK, maybe too much math, definitely too many monkeys, but the likelihood of any of these blind monkeys ever typing our specified sequence in a time equal to the history of the universe is less than 1 in 1019, or less than one part in ten billion billion. So the odds of forming a single, relatively short specified protein with 75 amino acids by accident are vanishingly small, regardless of how many stars with Earth-like planets may exist. We are beyond laughingly small to pretty darn ridiculous.

Don’t tell me amino acids can be created by accident. Don’t tell me about “billions and billions” of years for life to arise. Don’t tell me about “countless” stars and planets in the universe. It all doesn’t matter. Using simple concepts of number— exponents— one can expose as false claims that life arose by accident.

Case made.  And then you have to worry about the possibility of amino acids gathering together into polypeptides and then proteins.  

I promised to give you counterarguments, and here is one from Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould, among others. They say it is “false” that Darwin’s theory rests on chance alone; they say it works by “cumulative selection.” Say you start with a piece of gibberish and you want to transform it into meaningful text— you want to transform gibberish into “what fools these mortals be.” You give the gibberish a spin— you randomly change letters, or mutate the DNA code in the world of life— and some of the resulting English letters/DNA letters may be correct. Not many, but perhaps one or maybe more. You hold on to any that are correct. You give the remaining English letters/DNA letters a second spin/mutation, and perhaps you get another one or more that are correct, and now you hold on to those also. You keep doing this. This process will converge in a reasonable period of time to yield the English phrase, or the DNA code, you are looking for. 

Dawkins and many others, with umpteen degrees and peer-reviewed articles to their credit, claim this “cumulative selection” drives Darwinian evolution. To which I meekly respond, in the words of the great John McEnroe: “YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!” How does the gene know what it is looking for? How does it “cumulatively select” good letters and keep mutating only the bad letters? You get a designed product, and we’re not supposed to notice the wizard behind the curtain running the show? You sneak intelligence in the back door but still claim the process is “natural”? So to Dawkins and many others, “cumulative selection” works like this. You have an ordinary gene (let’s call him “Joe”) just sitting there, hiding out in the DNA, minding his own business.  Not a lot happens in the genome. Sure there’s replication, but the error rate on that is only one letter in a billion. 

But one day there is a mistake, and a DNA letter is changed by accident.  Joe says, “Hey, that feels good, I might be able to use that someday” and decides to hang onto that change for future generations.  It’s a slow process, but Joe is patient. Sure enough, just 125,314 generations later, somehow, inexplicably, a string of DNA letters from Joe’s buddy Hal gets inserted by accident when Joe is being replicated, and Joe says, “You know, that feels good too. I’ve got a hunch I might be able to use those extra letters someday, particularly if another 27 changes are made in just the right spots in my DNA code.”  Well what do you know, but it all works out perfect for Joe in just 72,437,197 more generations.

Reality is a far cry from possibility.”

A common theme you hear from parents is how parenting is so challenging yet so rewarding at the same time! But my guest on the Creation Today Show, “The Art of Raising Children”, Avery Foley, says that parenting is sanctifying. A huge foundational part of parenting is teaching children how the Bible applies to everyday life, and doing that well requires a consistent discipline of being in the Word.

Mrs. Foley encourages parents to saturate their children in the Word of God, or, as she puts it, “we swim in the Word of God.” This strategy informs biblical parenting so that children learn not to just “put off” the wrong behavior, but also understand why they must “put on” the righteous behavior! Mrs. Foley emphasizes that this is important because biblical parenting is not behavior modification, but heart transformation. When you teach your children the Word of God, they will have hearts that are bent towards Him and obeying His commands instead of just blindly following rules because their behavior is always being corrected.

This is hard work! It takes diligent practice, lots of trial and error, and definitely lots of prayer! But every struggle is worth it. As Mrs. Foley puts it, “Your children’s spiritual legacy is more important than whatever else is going on.” Parents must prioritize the spiritual wellbeing of their children over any activities, social gatherings, or school functions. Eternity matters, and parents have a huge role in helping their children become “heavenly-minded.”

A battle wages all around us. Fierce fighting between good and evil. Angels and demons. Light and dark. It may sound like the start to a fantasy book, but this is real! The book of Romans tells us that we don’t wrestle with flesh and blood, but with spiritual forces of this world. It is a real and intense battle that we cannot see with our human eyes, but it is dangerous and more important than ever that we understand what is going on. That’s why I invited my friend and mentor, Pastor Don Landis of Jackson Hole Bible College, to discuss this very topic with us! He teaches a whole class on this at the school, so you are going to want to strap in as he gives a brief overview of this important topic over the course of one hour. 

Pastor Landis shows how the battle we are talking about is between God and Satan. God loves us, but Satan hates us! We can see this through all of the pain and suffering of sin compared to the grace and love that comes from God. Pastor Landis explains how Satan wants to be like God, but he can’t. What God creates, Satan counterfeits. So when we see the twisted versions of the truth people in this world are believing, we can know that it is all part of the battle going on around us between the truth of God and the lies of the devil. 

So what do we do? For the believer, it is clear. There is NO neutral. There is NO middle ground. We are either for God or against Him, and we must choose. If we are for God, then we are working and living in a way that reflects His truth and destroys the lies of the enemy. So we must speak to our friends and family, train our children, monitor what we read and watch ALL with God’s Kingdom in mind. We do not want to succumb to the lies of Satan in this battle.

The topic of slavery is a sensitive subject for most people – and for good reason! Although the practice of selling and owning other people has existed for centuries in all different cultures and contexts, we often see a particular type of slavery (chattel slavery) discussed today. This type of slavery is when one person has total ownership of another and treats them as a piece of property with no rights whatsoever. 

Historically, however, there were different types of slaves, with most of them being individuals who were enslaved to pay off a debt or crime. This is exactly what my friend, Vocab Malone, discussed on the Creation Today Show “Is Biblical Slavery Justified?”. This simple step of defining the terms we are working with makes a huge difference!

Although the Bible makes it very clear from the beginning that slavery is evil since it does not treat people as Image-bearers, the rules surrounding slavery in the Bible make it very clear that God gave radical instructions to His people about how to treat slaves humanely in a time where indentured servitude was common. Vocab makes several points about how God condemns slavery throughout the Bible, and uses language about setting the captives free! It is clear that the Bible does not condone nor justify slavery in any way!

We have a sin problem in this world, not a skin problem. Without Jesus, we are all slaves to sin, which is opposite of what God wants for us. Vocab reiterates this point and encourages us to point others to the truth of God’s Word so they can experience true FREEDOM!! You don’t want to miss this enlightening and informative show. Enjoy!

Is it possible that an eruption could produce a mountain of evidence for Creation Science? Mount St. Helens proved that it was when it erupted forty-four years ago and rapidly formed geologic layers and carved canyons in a matter of hours. For years, secular scientists had used geologic layers and massive canyons as proof of millions of years, but Mount St. Helens blew that all out of the water!

In the Creation Today Show “How Mount St. Helens Rescued Creation Science,” my friend and geologist Bill Hoesch discussed the science behind the significance of Mount St. Helens. But he first clarified how any statements about the age of rocks are ASSUMPTIONS, not facts. So it all comes down to the lens you are viewing things through. Are you looking to find real, scientific results or are you determined to view the evidence through a specific worldview?

Ultimately, scientists have struggled with the findings from Mount St. Helens because they have a desired outcome that was not supported by the evidence. As one of our Creation Today+ Partners pointed out though,

“Assumptions + Wishes + Cherry Picked Data + Intimidation =  Desired Outcome. But Desired Outcome ≠ Scientifically Tested Data Results.”

The church has become divided on the age of the earth. Although the Genesis account is very clear, and its themes are repeated throughout Scripture, the debate rages on. With all this controversy going on, I knew I had to talk to my good friend Dr. Tim Chaffey about what’s really going on.

In the Creation Today Show, “What Did the Church Fathers REALLY Think of Genesis?” we looked into the period of 400 years that scholars refer to as the time of the church fathers. Surely those who were pillars of the early church after Jesus’ ascension can provide some insight into this debate! And boy were they insightful!

According to Dr. Chaffey, there was not really any debate about young earth vs. old earth back then because nearly everyone embraced the idea of a literal six-day creation! People like Bishop Irenaeus, Hippolytus of Rome, and many others wrote in no uncertain terms that Genesis clearly describes a young earth created in six literal days. These church fathers understood Genesis to be literal. Why? Because Jesus very clearly took Genesis literally, and that should be enough for us!

Dr. Chaffey walks through some of the misinterpretations and misconceptions surrounding these early church teachings that contribute to the age of the earth debate today. And he ends the show with truly the crux of the issue – while everyone is welcome to hold their own opinion of the age of the earth, you can’t change what the early church fathers believed and recorded to fit your perspective. That’s dishonest.

Has the key to evolution’s downfall been around since 1957? If you’re someone who enjoys science, then you might consider the fact that the theory of evolution has had its fair share of significant gaps and holes since the beginning, but the presentation of Haldane’s dilemma should solidify the theory’s unscientific foundation for any doubters still out there. 

In the Creation Today show, “How to Destroy Evolution in 5 Minutes,” my new friend and director of Living Waters Europe, John Harris, explained the foundation and background of this scientific dilemma. You’ll have to watch the show and stick with us for the first several minutes of scientific explanation. But then we get to the fun part. The destroying evolution part!

In order to calculate how long it would take for a common ape-like ancestor to evolve to the modern day human, Mr. Harris uses a chart to show how many “base pairs” of DNA would need to evolve a certain percentage via positive mutations each generation. Setting aside the improbability of beneficial mutations, Mr. Harris continues his generosity with the evolutionists by decreasing the percentage difference between apes and humans, and assuming that there was a beneficial mutation each generation. 

Now, even with all this generosity, the math just doesn’t add up! Even assuming the most favorable conditions to evolution, Haldane’s Dilemma shows that it would take approximately 180 billion years to get from ape-like creature to man. Imagine how long it would take if you plugged in the real numbers, which are much much higher!

Of the various fields of sciences, archaeology is one that atheists don’t typically go to when trying to disprove the Bible. Why? Because the overwhelming amount of archaeological evidence we have corroborates Biblical accounts in ways that are hard to deny. From the walls of Jericho to the empty tomb, physical finds from the ancient world are some of the strongest pieces of evidence for the inerrancy of the Bible.

In this week’s Creation Today Show, “New Testament Archaeology,” my guest and friend, Chris Ashcraft, walks us through several of these physical finds. He shows us the site where scholars believe Jesus healed the paralytic that was lowered through the roof, as well as several ossuaries, including one that showed the reality of crucifixion in those days. Watching the Bible truly come to life through these incredible finds is quite the experience, and one you don’t want to miss!

In one particularly interesting section from our discussion of ossuaries, Mr. Ashcraft tells the fascinating account of forgery claims that rocked the scholarly and archeological world! Bet you didn’t think this show was going to contain a tale of such controversy! I surely didn’t! But I digress. Mr. Ashcraft explains how one famous ossuary displayed in the Royal Ontario Museum –  the “James ossuary,” which possessed an inscription referencing Jesus – was attacked by the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) in 2003. This was huge! If the inscription was a forgery, it could imply a cover-up or scheme by early followers of Jesus to support a narrative that simply wasn’t true.

However, after four years of trial, more than 75 witnesses, and 5,000 pages of testimony, the prosecution was advised to drop the case after many experts recanted their findings under cross examination. The win was monumental, and created a major embarrassment for the IAA. Once again, truth wins!

What does geology say about the age of the earth? Why do some geologists study the evidence and come to the conclusion that the earth is old, but others conclude that the earth is young? If you study this topic, you may hear what sounds like solid scientific evidence to support both sides, which makes it even more confusing!

Thankfully, I know an expert who can help us have a basic understanding of what the evidence says. Dr. John Whitmore, Professor of Geology at Cedarville University, joins me this week for the Creation Today Show, “Creation Geology? Is That a Thing?” One of the things I love about Dr. Whitmore is his willingness to be transparent about the field of Creation Geology and what the evidence says. According to him, Biblical geologists are few and far between, so a lot of work still has to be done!

Despite this, Dr. Whitmore describes how various geologic formations that have been used to prove an old earth need further study because the evidence doesn’t fully line up. On top of this, the so-called dating methods used consistently in geology are completely unreliable. With this in mind, it is clear to see that there is much progress yet to be made.

Dr. Whitmore encourages us to call out the younger generation of geologists among us so we can advance the field. As the saying goes, “Many hands make light work,” and the same is true in the study of geology. The more Creation geologists we have studying the evidence, the faster we can understand the beauty of the world around us.

When it comes to the scientific accuracy of the Bible, I contend that whenever the Bible speaks about science it is always accurate. Not only that but one of the greatest proofs that the Bible is a supernatural book is that there are many things written in the Word of God that were not discovered to be scientifically accurate until sometimes hundreds and even thousands of years later.

Apologist, Charlie Campbell, shared this thought well: “The men who penned the Scriptures revealed several amazing facts about the Earth and the universe thousands of years before scientists discovered these declarations to be true. This is astounding!…These men lived two, three, four thousand years before the invention of the telescope, microscopes, satellites, deep-diving submarines, and other technologies were around…So how did they know these things? They had ‘inside information’ from the One who created the universe.”1 As a result, I too, have the utmost faith that this advanced knowledge of the Bible, stating scientific facts before scientists discovered them, makes a very convincing case that the Bible is indeed a supernatural book.

Clearly the Bible writers often had no idea that the words they wrote were scientifically way ahead of their time nor did they even know they were making scientific statements. But they had, as Charlie Campbell states, “inside information,” given to them by supernatural revelation from the Creator of the universe.

But as amazing as the above argument is for the supernatural nature of the Bible there is even a more powerful argument for the existence of the God who not only made science possible but who supernaturally created you and me. And this argument concerns the “inside information” contained in your very own DNA molecules within each and every one of your 30 trillion cells that make up “you.” Let me explain.

When you were conceived you weren’t much to look at. You were only a single fertilized egg cell – but or what a cell! Within nine short months this one cell, without a brain, somehow orchestrated the most amazing and complex building process in the universe! Just how did your original cell know when and how to divide to form two cell, then four, and then clusters of others. And how did these daughter cells know when to begin to form tissue and muscle fibers. And how did these multiplied cells then know when and how to form your tiny heart, brain, and all of your other organs. Somehow your original single cell knew how to exchange matter and energy in such intricate ways as to form entire systems within your then tiny frame. Your digestive, circulatory, urinary, and respiratory systems were completed in record time, until nine months later out you came. Clearly all the information needed and the ability to create the 30 trillion cell package called “you” had to reside in your first tiny cell’s DNA molecules preprogrammed as it were to create you.

And here is where the magic really takes place for you see your original single cell had to know that at a future point in time certain unknown substances, i.e., the nutrients from your mother, would come into its sphere of influence and would have to be broken down and reformatted into useful tiny substances that could generate the cell multiplication process. Not only that, but the DNA in your original single cell had to have an incredible storehouse of complex bio-chemical knowledge to orchestrate this entire process. And the only way that your original single cell could be coded with the instructions to perform these incredibly complicated processes on certain unknown future substances is if that cell had advanced “inside information” or foreknowledge. And the only way it could have this foreknowledge is if there is a God who placed it there!

No wonder David said in (Psalm 139:14): “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” My friends the next time someone tells you that the Bible is not a supernatural book and that you are the product of a series of random fortuitous accidents (evolution), let them read this devotional and explain how foreknowledge came about!

It’s such a self-focused world these days, right? The younger generation prioritizes “how I feel” over everything, it seems! But is there truly a problem with this line of thinking? What’s the harm in prioritizing yourself? Isn’t it common knowledge that you’re supposed to “put your own oxygen mask on before helping others?”

But this is the lie of modern culture. And that’s why I invited Martyn Iles, the Executive CEO of Answers in Genesis and author of the new book “Who Am I? Solving the Identity Puzzle,” to the Creation Today Show this week. The current generation isn’t just “putting on their own oxygen mask first.” They are believing that “their truth” is the ultimate authority, and prioritizing their belief about themselves, morality, and values over what the Word of God has to say.

From the beginning of the Bible, God made it very clear that we were created in His image. When we try to find our own identity separate from that, we end up in a world of confusion and depression, as Mr. Iles explains. It’s no wonder the mental health crisis in the younger generations is such a huge and growing problem!

According to Mr. Iles, when “how I feel,” is the most important thing, society becomes completely dysfunctional! When feelings reign in society, people want the blessings of God but not God Himself. When feelings reign in society, objective truth about how to live is ignored and pushed to the side, while the “benefits” of Christianity are accepted and pursued. But you can’t have it both ways!

Instead of living in a “feelings” world, we are called to live as Image-bearers who share the TRUTH of God’s Word. We aren’t called to prioritize how we feel, but instead to prioritize what God says. Mr. Iles says that the impact of this shift would be astounding. 

So grab your pen, paper, and a copy of God’s Word to enjoy this conversation about how to live in the identity God has given us instead of the upside down world of “my own image.”

We live in an upside down world, that’s for sure! With so many lies being portrayed as truth, how can we, as Christians, stand against and respond to the muddying of the truth of God’s Word? Thankfully, my friend Dr. Louis Markos provides us with some amazing insight on this week’s Creation Today show, “God vs the gods.”

According to Dr. Markos, Satan can only flip and pervert God’s perfect design. As Christians, we need to have discernment to know when something that may initially have similarities to the truth of God’s Word is truly just a perversion of truth. But where does that discernment come from?

Dr. Markos gives some very practical tips on how to recognize and discern what is true. First, we must ask the Holy Spirit to guide us through the world of spiritual warfare that is all around us. Every believer is given the Holy Spirit to discern truth in a culture of lies. If something isn’t from God, the Holy Spirit will let us know, if we are willing to listen.

Part of that willingness to listen is reading the Bible on its own terms, which Dr. Markos says is the second thing we can do as we walk through a world of spiritual warfare. Instead of trying to fit other worldviews into the text of Scripture, we must read the Bible for what it is – God’s Word and the ONLY source of objective truth. When we take God at His Word, we show that we are willing to listen to what the Holy Spirit has to say. This mindset is crucial in discerning truth from lies in today’s culture.

This idea is summed up by a phrase from Dr. David Cooper of The Biblical Research Society. “When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense.” Instead of trying to fit Satan’s deception and competing worldviews into the Bible, read God’s Word for what it is: objective truth. It is only then that we can discern what is God’s truth in a world that props up the lies of false gods.

What is your reaction when I say, “the laws of thermodynamics”? Hang on – don’t click off so fast! I promise this conversation was not at all a boring science lecture, and you don’t want to miss it. Be prepared to have your mind blown by how some fundamental scientific laws so soundly defeat naturalism.

In this week’s Creation Today Show “Thermodynamics: The Death of Naturalism,” my friend Master Master Rocket Rob Webb (watch the show to understand that reference!) gives an incredible lesson on how these scientific laws present a real problem for naturalists. I’ll leave the science-y explanation to the professional, but, to sum it up, according to the laws of thermodynamics, without a Creator, the universe would have to be both eternal and not eternal. Crazy, I know!

“How could this be?” you may be wondering. You’re going to have to watch the show if you want the full explanation, but the big idea to take away is this: the origin of the universe is simply not a natural event, and evolutionists cannot accept that. They would rather contradict science than embrace the supernatural!

As believers, we know truth, and should be passionate about sharing it with others. Mr. Webb encourages us to use some of this general knowledge as we seek to share the truth. One of the tips he offers is just to ask questions about some of these scientific laws and theories secularists so adamantly hold to. Even if they don’t admit the flaw in their thinking surrounding the idea of an evolutionary origin of the universe in conjunction with scientific laws like thermodynamics, a seed can be planted. And that’s all we can ask for!

Sometimes, as Christians, we can forget the weight of how awesome salvation truly is! We are filthy, wicked sinners who are so undeserving of grace and forgiveness; yet God extends His love, grace, and forgiveness so freely to us. What a powerful testimony of the goodness, holiness, and majesty of our great God!

After sitting down with a Twitter friend of mine, Daniel, I was reminded of these powerful truths. In the Creation Today show, “From Atheist to Evangelist,” Daniel shares the miraculous work of God in his own life. Before Christ, he had a huge ego and thought that Christianity was crazy! Daniel discusses how atheists truly do not understand what true Christianity is and the implications it has. And that was him.

But, after interacting with some of Creation Today’s content on Twitter, Daniel messaged me to argue his position. After a bit of back and forth, I sat down for a phone call with him, and we discussed all things science, religion, atheism, and Christianity. To be perfectly honest, I don’t remember every detail of that conversation, but Daniel says it stuck with him. 

That phone call led to months of searching, studying, and questioning for Daniel. Was it possible that all of the beliefs he had held for so long were wrong? God was working on him, and even though the process was long, it was worth every moment. Eventually, Daniel came to the realization that God is real, and, from there, he learned about salvation and put his faith in Jesus Christ! What a miracle!

Daniel’s story is so much more than what I could sum up in a short blog, so we made a special exception this week and made the full hour and a half long conversation available to everyone! You don’t want to miss this testimony of God’s faithfulness in His pursuit of one man’s soul.

It’s time for a Fraud Tour! As crazy as it may sound, this fraudulent tour will be very exciting, because it makes vital blows to the theory of evolution. On this week’s Creation Today show, “Widespread Fraud Discovered in Museums” Dr. Carl Werner describes just a few of the hundreds of intentional frauds he has worked on exposing over the course of three decades of his life.

Dr. Werner explains how countless scientists intentionally altered findings with the intention of promoting a certain archeological discovery as something it’s not. For example, Dr. Werner shows evidence of scientists adding plaster to skull fragments and remains in order to make them larger. These changes were made with the intention of making the possibility of ape-men – which would be considered a transitional form supporting the theory of evolution – far more likely. 

And it doesn’t stop at just plaster! Dr. Werner discusses misleading interpretations of scientific findings, purposeful deceit, and countless other ways these frauds have been carried out. But what makes this man qualified to speak on this subject? Well, Dr. Werner and his wife have spent nearly 30 years traveling around the world to countless museums and dig sites in order to photograph and film ape-men fossils and interview several experts about these findings. The things revealed will shock you!

Are geneticists conducting the research and experiments that scientists should have been doing all along? When it comes to evolution, the debate between secular scientists and creation scientists is often centered on, “How did it get here?” But in the Creation Today show, “Darwin’s Finches Cry Fowl”, Dr. Brian Thomas teaches that the better question to ask is, “How does it work?”

The reason for the second question is objectivity. If we are just observing the mechanics of something, it’s hard to let our biases and worldview interfere with our ability to accurately interpret the results. And that’s exactly what geneticists are doing as they study Darwin’s famous finches that birthed his theory of evolution. Instead of studying how finches with various types of beaks came into existence, these scientists are focusing their efforts on understanding how the infrastructure that builds the structure works.

Darwin theorized that outside changes prompted the evolution of the finches’ beaks. This concept is known as “survival of the fittest.” However, scientists have looked at the genetic code (or genome) of these creatures, and discovered a fascinating truth that disproves the Darwinian model! Different versions of the same gene – otherwise known as alleles – that determine beak shape have been found in finches. All the phenotypes are already embedded in the creature! It’s an incredible (and super hyper genius – as Dr. Thomas said) design feature put there by God!

If you’re not a science person, don’t worry. Dr. Thomas makes this concept very simple to understand, and is so fun to listen to with his personable way of teaching. Have you ever heard of catechisms? Maybe you learned them growing up, and have fond memories of reciting catechisms with siblings or friends. Or perhaps you have heard of them, but never really learned much about them besides what your Catholic grandmother taught you. Maybe you have never heard of this funny word at all, and are wondering why Creation Today is doing some show about cats and chasms! Wherever you land, you don’t want to miss this week’s conversation with Israel Wayne.

In “Israel Wayne and the Secrets of the Lost Art”, author and director of the ministry Family Renewal, Israel Wayne, teaches us all about the importance of this lost art of catechisms. Using his book “Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism”, Mr. Wayne explains the importance of teaching solid doctrine and theology to your children from an early age. Although it can seem like a daunting task, this book simplifies the process of teaching doctrine and apologetics to people of all ages. Through a series of questions and answers supported by Scripture, his book lays out foundational truths in a simple and easy-to-understand way.

Mr. Wayne even walks through several of the catechisms in the book, and explains why they are important, clarifies any questions about them, and gives helpful tips on how to teach and help others memorize them. It is truly such an uplifting conversation that encourages people to learn the truth for themselves, and share it with others. If you want to be encouraged and inspired to know God and dig deeper into His Word, schedule some time this week to tune into this conversation. 

There are quite literally MILLIONS of movies, books, songs, and poems all about that special, four-letter word we all crave to hear…love! But this little word can create so much difficulty and confusion, can’t it? The person we think we love doesn’t love us back, or we start doing crazy things we never thought we would, all in the name of love. What’s up with that?

Maybe our perspective on love is twisted. What if the culture has so skewed our definition of love that we don’t truly understand what true love is? These thoughts and questions are important ones, which is why I had my friend and childhood pastor, Dr. Jeff Redlin, on the Creation Today show, “What is True Love?” Personally, I prefer the title “What is Twu Wuv?” and, if you’re a Princess Bride fan like myself, you probably catch my drift!

Classic movie fan or not, you will *love* the insight Pastor Redlin shares in this conversation! In order to answer the question, he gives us the foundation that is required to understand what love truly is. In his own words, “If we understand God, we get love.” Pastor Redlin explains how love is part of God’s nature, and, as a result, He is loving. The only reason we as humans can experience this great, all-consuming love, is because God first loved us. 

When we begin to know and understand God, we experience His love in new incredible ways, and, as a result, we become loving people. Instead of desperately searching for the best tips and tricks to love better, we grow closer to the Father, and His perfect love flows through us. In order to truly be a vessel that’s showing the love of God, we must be filled with something other than ourselves. Only when we continually ask God to empty ourselves of our selfish wants and tendencies towards sin, and replace it with a filling of the Holy Spirit can we display genuine love towards others. It is the result of the sanctifying work of God within us, and not anything to do with us, or what we can do.

Pastor Redlin shares so many more incredible insights and practical applications of what true love looks like in our lives. This show is truly an eye-opening and wisdom-filled conversation about the radical nature of the love of God. If you didn’t already know, water is a big part of our lives! Our bodies are approximately 60% water, around 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans, and humans can die if they go just 3 or 4 days without the stuff! So for a world so dependent on water in many ways, why are things like the earth’s oceans such a mystery to so many? 

Well that is a great question, and exactly why I had my friend Dr. Frank Sherwin from the Institute for Creation Research come on this week’s Creation Today Show, “Oceans: Earth’s Mysterious Abyss”. Dr. Sherwin is quite the fascinating character, but he is also absolutely brilliant! His life story includes everything from almost failing high school biology, working for a city fire department, serving as a Navy jet engine mechanic, and going on to major in biology and get a master’s degree in zoology! Talk about interesting!

Dr. Sherwin discusses the evidence of a worldwide flood, which supports the Biblical account and how modern scientists are willingly ignorant of this factual scientific evidence. For example, evolutionists make claims of Mars being covered by a flood of Biblical proportions, but they also claim that it is unscientific to believe in a worldwide flood! Talk about speaking out of both sides of your mouth!

Now hold on…I know you may be thinking, “This is great and all, but what does this have to do with the mystery of Earth’s oceans?” And that is a valid question. But never fear! Dr. Sherwin talks about how the water that has been here since the beginning keeps the temperature of our planet safe for human habitation. Additionally, he discusses the fascinating features of creatures like trilobites and octopuses that show the brilliance of God’s design. 

This type of evidence is so hard to deny! In Dr. Sherwin’s words, “The evolutionists have come screaming and kicking to the Biblical view of things but aren’t acknowledging it as from God.” So what is the mystery of earth’s oceans? They are truly a mystery to the evolutionist who refuses to acknowledge God. What a fascinating perspective shift! You don’t want to miss all the details of this show with the brilliant Dr. Sherwin, so be sure you schedule some time into your week to learn about the thing that covers 70% of the earth’s surface!

Remember the Ice Age movies? You know, the ones where the terrified squirrel is always losing his acorn, and the unlikely group of friends is always traveling and going on adventures together? Well, I hate to break it to you, but the events of these films really don’t prepare you for learning the truth about the woolly mammoths. Maybe you knew that, but I still tried to convince my team that me going on an Ice Age binge was actually work to prepare for my most recent Creation Today show, “The Mystery of the Woolly Mammoth”. You guessed it – they weren’t buying it. It was worth a shot though!

Thankfully, my friend Michael Oard came very prepared to correct my misconceptions and share the evidence behind what happened to the mammoths. As a 30-year veteran meteorologist, speaker, and author, he has years of study and evidence under his belt to tackle this topic from all sides. Mr. Oard explains the three primary positions that attempt to explain the extinction of these mysterious beasts – uniformitarian, non-creationist catastrophist, and creationist catastrophist. 

I’ll leave it up to the expert to explain the ins and outs of each of these positions, but suffice it to say my mind is officially blown at all the things people (myself included!) incorrectly assume about the extinction of the mammoths. Just to give you a sneak peek at one example – the mammoths weren’t found in glacial ice, but actually in permafrost! Who knew?

My mind is still spinning with all the new information I learned during this conversation, so you will definitely want to take notes during the show or even watch it more than once so you don’t miss anything. If you passed the 5th grade, you probably are familiar with the scientific method. As you progressed through school, you most likely utilized each of the steps in your science classes and labs. It became like second nature to make an observation, create a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, analyze your data, and come to a conclusion. But what if I told you that this method that has been widely taught as the correct way to do science isn’t in fact the only way scientists conduct their work? If you’re like me, mind = blown!

In this week’s Creation Today show, “The Scientific Method is Wrong”, Dr. Danny Faulkner talks about the importance of understanding science outside of the scope of the conventional methods of conducting scientific research. Dr. Faulkner says that most people think about science as experimentation, but that’s not always the case. So much of science is rooted in observation. Take, for example, astronomy or taxonomy. Two fields of science that are based primarily on observation and classification. These fields are still considered science, but don’t involve experimentation. 

Dr. Faulkner gives several more examples of science being done without the use of experimentation. The point? Science isn’t limited to the scientific method. Scientists can make valid discoveries and present accurate theories using methods outside of the classic model of experimentation.

As a semi-public figure in ministry, I get this question about Calvinism versus Arminianism all the time. Although, as a ministry, we don’t publicly take a stand on this issue, I love what my friend Ray Comfort from Living Waters had to say about these two doctrines. Check it out!

“Why I’m neither Calvinist nor Arminian…

How do God’s sovereign grace and man’s responsibility to turn to Him fit together?  For example, Ezekiel 33:11 says, “As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die…?”  

It is clear from Scripture that He grants us repentance (Acts 5:31; 11:18), and He also gives us faith as a gift (Romans 12:3), but He then commands all men everywhere to repent and to have faith (believe). See Mark 1:15; Acts 17:30.  

We also read that “Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13), and of cause John 3:16 says “whoever believes on Him shall not perish.” Whoever means whoever. 

Charles Spurgeon proclaimed divine sovereignty yet he also preached man’s responsibility, although he admitted that he didn’t understand how they fit together.  

Consider his exhortations to the sinner: “Believe in Jesus, and though you are now in slippery places your feet shall soon be set upon a rock of safety”;  “Sinner fly to Christ”;  “O sinner, humble yourself under the mighty hand of God…”  

And he preached that it is the sinner’s responsibility to trust in the Savior: “Trust Christ with your soul and He will save it.  I know you will not do this unless the Holy Spirit constrains you, but this does not remove your responsibility.”

The Arminian and Calvinist views are diametrically opposed to each other, yet believers on both sides point to a multitude of verses to back their theology. If you choose one view or the other, don’t let your choice cut you off from others who may believe differently. 

Is it possible that the two opposing truths can walk together?  It is if all that is missing is some information for them to harmonize. The day will come when we will understand all things (see 1 Corinthians 13:12), and it is then that we will be glad that we didn’t cause division in the Church, and “sow discord among brethren,” something God hates (Proverbs 6:19). 

Sadly, Church history has shown us that Christ-centered men of God have clashed over these issues (e.g., Wesley and Whitefield).  More recently I have seen brethren make a theological stand and much to their dismay they were marked by their home church as troublemakers. Fine missionaries have been pulled from the field, pastors fired from the ministry, and churches have split because of this issue.  

So, if you do think you have it worked out, be careful that you strive to keep unity among the brethren, and then focus on your God-given commission.  Firefighters exist to fight fires, not to fight each other. When the firing squad stands in a circle, it makes the enemy happy.  

Every moment that you and I spend arguing about theological interpretation is time we have lost forever that could have been spent in prayer for the unsaved or in seeking to save that which is lost. 

I wouldn’t be surprised if much of the contention for this issue isn’t based on a supposed love of the truth, but is rooted in sinful pride.”

Our public education system is under a lot of scrutiny these days – and for good reason! Things like changes to curriculum and new requirements for teachers have made the decision on whether or not to send your child to public school one that is growing more difficult for many parents. In the Creation Today show “Behind Closed Books: The Sexual Holocaust in Our Schools”, I talked with Bridgette Heap from the Feed My Sheep Foundation about the hidden dangers of the comprehensive sex education curriculum infiltrating our schools. 

Now be forewarned. This conversation is more graphic than our typical shows, but the information is more important than ever as the school system shifts towards a push to get around parental consent and knowledge when it comes to sex education. Resources like Amaze.org (a free website full of videos very accessible to children) and graphic books about sex and sexuality are becoming the norm for schools to offer children as young as 5 years old, and parental consent is not a requirement for educators to teach these subjects to students. We MUST be informed so we know how to combat these attacks on our children.

Mrs. Heap explains how children as young as 5 years old are being taught about sexual content such as masturbation, erections, private parts (called “middle parts” in some books, inferring that such body parts do not need to remain private), and more. As children get older, the material only gets more concerning. From describing various types of sexual intercourse to giving information on discussing abortion with a healthcare provider behind parents’ backs, these books are horrifyingly graphic and freely accessible to school-aged children.

As believers, it is so important for us to be aware of the type of sexual education that is being taught to our children so we can know how to better equip the younger generation to respond. Mrs. Heap provides several resources to empower parents to know what content their children are being offered and how they can have better, more age appropriate conversations with their children about these topics. Whether you are on social media or not, you have to admit that these big technology platforms are influential and have the power to sway public opinion.With the younger generation turning to Twitter (now known as X) and Instagram for their news, it is more important than ever for Christians to be engaging on social media. 

That’s why I invited Pastor Wendell Phelps, a Twitter apologist, on the Creation Today show, “X Marks the Spot – Twitter Apologetics” to have a conversation with me about what that looks like for believers today.

Pastor Wendell is so easy-going and friendly, but that doesn’t mean that he shies away from engaging with hostile atheists on what he calls his “mission field”. For him, that can look like typing out a slightly longer explanation of why he believes what he talks about online, but it also looks like “trolling” the haters right back! He says that these commenters often respect their own methods and are more willing to open up a dialogue with him when they see him working on their playing field.

These conversations can get intense, so he also gives great advice on when to shake the dust off your feet and move on. Sometimes it’s all about planting that seed and praying that their eyes will be opened to where following their worldview to its logical conclusion leads – which is often illogical confusion! 

We go through several more of Pastor Wendell’s actual tweets, and talk through his thought process on each of them, as well as his plan with responses to critics. If you’ve been to the comments section of basically any Creation vs. Evolution content on social media, you have probably seen countless people discuss this idea of theistic evolution as a great “compromise” between those who believe in evolution and those who believe in God. This conversation grew rapidly with the release of William Lane Craig’s book “In Quest of the Historical Adam” which tried to merge God and evolution, and created quite the discussion in Creationist and Evolutionist circles alike. But what is theistic evolution? Is it truly a compromise?

These questions are some of the reasons I have devoted so much time in the past few months researching so many foundational aspects of this theory that are needed to understand what exactly it means to believe in theistic evolution. We just scratch the surface of some of this research in this week’s Creation Today show, “Theistic Evolution on Trial”.

One of the most important things you can do in conversations like these is to define your terms. Great confusion happens in debates when two people are using the same word, but are defining it differently. A prime example of this confusion comes with the word “evolution” itself! The scientific idea of descent with modification from pre-existing species is one that is completely compatible with a Creator who designed adaptation. But this definition doesn’t encompass the whole idea of evolution, so further clarification is needed. 

I could go down a rabbit hole talking about the problems with defining evolution, but, ultimately, this whole topic is not a salvation issue. Now I know you might be thinking, “Eric, why are we even having this conversation in the first place then?” Trust me, I get this question all the time. The thing is, theistic evolution isn’t a salvation issue, but it’s a foundation that makes salvation necessary that makes it an issue.

The idea of theistic evolution is one that promotes a god who created a world that, for billions of years, was full of death and suffering until he finally got to what he really wanted in mankind. But this isn’t the God we see in the Bible. This is an attack on the very character of God. God molded creation; He didn’t mutate it. He created the world good – very good in fact. Theistic evolution says that God is okay with sin and suffering, and that is why accepting it as true is so dangerous. It is a manipulative lie from the Father of Lies himself.

When Christmastime rolls around, what do you think about? Perhaps you imagine the pretty lights and Christmas decorations all around you. Or maybe youthink of the nativity scene, and the glory of angels filling the sky, praising God. Maybe your mind goes to A Charlie Brown Christmas and Linus saying, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.” 

But how many of you think about the first man God created – Adam? The creation account is not one we often associate with Christmas and the incarnation of our Savior, but the link between Adam and Jesus is actually quite significant. And that’s why I sat down with the director of Answers in Genesis UK, Simon Turpin on the Creation Today show, “Why is Jesus Called the ‘Last Adam’?” to discuss that very topic. 

Mr. Turpin walks through the parallels between the first Adam, and Jesus, the Last Adam. In the beginning, Adam brought physical and spiritual death into the world through his sin, but Jesus, by dying a physical death on the cross, brought resurrection! Where Adam failed to obey, Christ’s perfect obedience was sufficient. The redemption of mankind from Genesis to the Gospels is the connection between the sin of the first Adam and the perfection of the Last Adam.

But why is the connection between creation and Christmas so important? Mr. Turpins says it best: “The Son of God became human so that humans can become sons of God.” In the beginning, God created humans in His image, so Jesus’ incarnation and perfect sacrifice on the cross made a way for us to get back to God’s perfect design. Where the first Adam failed, causing death to reign through his trespass, the Last Adam was victorious, causing righteousness to reign through His grace.

So this Christmas, as you spend time with your loved ones and open gifts around the tree, be sure to reflect on the grace and humility of Christ at Christmas, and recognize the gift of God in response to the failing of the first Adam. And take some time to watch this show to see the even greater beauty of Jesus as the Last Adam.

Open up any social media app on your phone and you will be greeted with countless posts full of arguments, hurt feelings, and negative influences. Sure, you can find positive things there too (like Creation Today!), but the overwhelming majority of content on social media results in comparison, envy, and anger. 

Guys, our children are on these platforms, taking in this content every single day. It’s no wonder we have a mental health crisis in this country when their constant reality is anxiety-inducing content conveniently stored in their back pocket. That’s why for this week’s Creation Today show, I brought on Patti Garibay, the founder of American Heritage Girls, to talk about this growing issue, and how we should address it from a biblical perspective.

Mrs. Garibay says that American Heritage Girls exists at this “Esther moment – for such a time as this.” For years, our girls have been inundated with fear, and it’s eating them up. So the problem facing us is how we combat that fear with truth to raise up a new generation of influential men and women who will serve God in bigger ways than we can imagine.

Although American Heritage Girls are not a one-stop shop solution for mental health issues, they are rooted in principles that serve as a helpful guide on a road towards improved mental health. Mrs. Garibay says reducing the noise of social media, getting outside, setting goals, and serving others all provide a good foundation for children to develop healthy minds. All of these ideas are found in God’s Word, which is the basis for everything American Heritage Girls does.

So what is something we can tangibly do to work towards better mental health in this country? Start by scheduling some time to watch this uplifting and insightful show with your family this week. The lessons shared may just surprise you.

Guten Tag und willkommen zur Creation Today Show! Oh my bad – it looks like I’m still in Germany-mode even after the end of Kreatikon 2023. But if you are wanting to see and experience more of German culture, you don’t want to miss this week’s show, “Science Around the World” where I give you an inside peek at this incredible biennial conference on creation. 

According to Paul Mathis, the mastermind behind Kreatikon, a big purpose of this conference is to affirm the literal belief in the Bible. From scientific lectures to interactive museums, Kreatikon does an incredible job at accomplishing this goal for people of all ages. The focus on the wondrous nature of God is truly admirable. As one of the speakers Dr. Stefan Drüeke told me, “You cannot separate the Creator from the Savior,” and Mr. Mathis has led his conference with that mindset by welcoming experts in scientific fields like biology, medicine, and geology, as well as speakers knowledgeable in theology.

All of my science lovers out there are going to love the information shared by these brilliant scientists. It is  incredible to see such genius thinkers praising God for His masterful design. But if you aren’t quite as scientifically-minded, don’t fear! It’s not often that I get to travel to Europe, so I made sure to get lots of fun behind-the-scenes content of the tastes and sights of Germany! My wife, Tanya, and I spent our last day there as American tourists, and explored some of the beautiful European architecture and feasted on the most incredible food. You will not want to miss this fun show full of science, the Bible, food, and beautiful Germany!

Behind the most technologically advanced inventions we enjoy today there are genius inventors and engineers. But have you ever wondered how these greatmen and women got ideas for these advanced technologies? To answer that question, we asked Professor Stuart Burgess to explain the concept of biomimicry in the Creation Today show “Reverse Engineering: The Genius of God’s Design”. 

According to Prof. Burgess, biomimicry is the idea that engineers design things based on designs we see in nature. You can see this in things such as small drones modeled after the dragonfly.

Prof. Burgess explains how a dragonfly’s wings both flap and twist to give it its functionality. But this design is incredibly hard to mimic! What God’s perfect design completes at 40 cycles per second, the leading man made design could only complete at 10 cycles per second.

Prof. Burgess talks through even more incredibly complex wonders of God’s design, and the man made copies that fall short in comparison: including the human hand, fingers, and knee compared to the prosthetic versions of these body parts. Like the Bible describes so perfectly in Job 37, creation predicts supreme design in nature. Even with the most brilliant engineers and inventors working around the clock, man can never achieve or exceed the intricacies of God’s design.

But Prof. Burgess is not one to stop people from learning how to design – far from it! He says that the best thing any engineer can do is to study God’s perfect design. Instead of believing the lie that evolution caused the complexities in nature we see all around us, we must look to God, His Word, and His creative design to understand how we see the world and all the inventions in it.

Whether you are an engineer and inventor or not, you don’t want to miss this exciting conversation with a brilliant man (who also happens to have a British accent that is so fun to listen to)! Take some time out of your week to enjoy this discussion of all things science and God’s design.

If you’re like me, you might have opened up Instagram on your phone anytime over the past week and a half and been flooded with clips and soundbites of a Liberty University Convocation speaker – one Dr. Rosaria Butterfield. As I scrolled through countless reels, I started to discover why people were so angry at Dr. Butterfield. In a way that can only be described as speaking the truth with the love of Jesus, she had the boldness to stand up against today’s culture of acceptance. 

In a world that tells people to “follow their heart” or “accept yourself just as you are,” Dr. Butterfield says differently. Her story is one of struggle with indwelling sin, fleshly desires, and surrender to the Father. After living a homosexual lifestyle for nearly a decade, Dr. Butterfield came to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, and had to make the choice to fight her sinful desires until they were dead. Completely. Not pushed to the side, ignored, or unaddressed. But completely dead and gone from her heart.

She was fighting to get back to God’s design for marriage. One man. One woman. For life. She transformed her mindset from one of victimhood to her sinful homosexual desires, to one that chose daily to drive a nail into those desires until they no longer consumed her heart. And what does she have to show for it? A husband. Children. Grandchildren. Generations of proof of God’s favor upon the life of a woman fully surrendered to Him.

You won’t believe what you can learn about Thomas Jefferson based on the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, or about John Hancock from his twenty-two prayer proclamations! Although these men were not perfect, in the words of Tim Barton, “Somehow God uses imperfect people to accomplish great things, and that is the story of America that we have forgotten.” When we forget the power of God working through imperfect people, we neglect our responsibility to fight for what we believe in. We dare not ignore such a profound call.

John Quincy Adams is a wonderful example of what can happen when we uphold our responsibility of fighting for our beliefs. According to Tim Barton, Adams was a great mentor to Abraham Lincoln, who is considered the man who ushered in the end of slavery. John Qunicy Adams fought for years to end the evils of slavery, but died before that ever came to fruition. He spent his whole life fighting for something he never saw realized. Yet his impact was still incredible, and can be felt today in the freedom of every person in America.

So as you take time over the holiday weekend to watch this Capitol tour, be sure to remember the importance of our heritage, and all that we must do to fight to preserve it.

I have a challenge for you. Turn on any news channel on your TV or open any news app on your phone. A quick scan of the contents will reveal polarizing opinions on…well, everything!

With so many political debates going on, things can start to look a bit confusing, which is why this week’s Creation Today show is so important!

In “Erasing America’s Heritage”, Mr. William Federer explains how viewing history through a Christian worldview is like turning the corner on a cornfield. “You see the rows line up, and American history suddenly makes so much sense.” Instead of sitting in confusion and letting our history get taken away, we must learn the truth of our history to remember who we really are.

Mr. Federer explains how the path to loss of freedom comes through fear, fraud, and free stuff, which ultimately lead to division. And the devil deals in division. But what is the goal of division? According to Mr. Federer, the goal is to create a problem that is really bad, and then sell a solution that’s just as bad. Because every time the people settle for a solution to division, a little bit of freedom is given up to the state.

If that felt like a firehose of information with little explanation, don’t worry! Mr. Federer is an incredible communicator, and explained with a clear passion the importance of remembering the heritage of freedom in America. If we begin to lose our liberty, we move closer towards a global government, which stands in opposition to God’s design. So grab your American flags and get ready for a captivating conversation about the Christian response to a continually divided America.

People debate truth all of the time. In a world of “my truth” and moral relativism, the quest for facts and objective reality is bigger than ever. In the Creation Today show, “Museum of the Bible: Preserving the Word”, Garrett Hinton, CRO of the Washington D.C. museum, says that God’s Word is the source of truth, since it is God’s revelation to mankind. And that fact is supported by the famous psychologist Jordan Peterson! But I’ll leave that story for the show.

So why is it important for Christians to realize the power of the Bible as absolute truth in their lives? If you ask Mr. Hinton, it’s because the younger generation depends on it! We are living with a generation that is biblically illiterate and unwilling to make a change because they do not recognize the Bible as truth. But why not?

Mr. Hinton says that it is easy for believers to take their easy access to the Bible for granted. How often does the average Christian pick up one of their multiple Bibles at home to truly read and study it? Not often enough, unfortunately. So why would we expect a biblically illiterate generation to do any differently?

That’s why the Museum of the Bible is so important! It walks through the preservation of the Word from its earliest manuscripts to the first phone with the Bible app, YouVersion. If you’ve ever attempted a “Bible in One Year” reading plan, you probably got to a point where you felt stuck in an endless cycle of reading a lot of names and “so-and-so begat so-and-so,” for verse after verse. Welcome, my friends, to genealogies! I know they don’t always sound exciting, but my friend Henry Smith totally changed that perception with his comments in the Creation Today show, “Genealogies of Genesis”.

Did you know that scholars have debated the timelines presented in various ancient manuscripts of the Bible? The Hebrew Masoretic text gives a different timeline than the Greek Septuagint does, which ultimately leads to a difference of over 1,000 years of history! Could it all be one big misunderstanding, or, is it possible that changes to the timeline are related to a – dare I say – conspiracy theory? Genealogies are already sounding a lot more interesting, right?

Before you freak out over that idea, allow me to explain. The Jewish leaders who had control over the manuscripts did not believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah. If the timeline presented in the manuscripts gave any sort of impression that Jesus was the promised Savior, there would be great incentive for those leaders to make some changes to the manuscripts. This was their livelihood and pride at stake!

Again, this is a theory produced by one interpretation of the evidence. There are countless ways to look at this topic, so you won’t want to miss what Henry Smith has to say! Whether you are a skeptic or are already convinced, be sure to take some time out of your day to check out this fascinating conversation. You are sure to be blessed by what Mr. Smith discusses, and how he discusses it.

Is the Bible true? It’s one of the foundational questions of the Christian faith, and the answer is debated widely across faiths and cultures. No matter your answer to this hot button question, you will want to listen to what Mike D’Virgilio has to say on the Creation Today Show, “The Bible…You Can’t Make this Up”. 

According to Mr. D’Virgilio, it does not make sense for the Bible to be man-made, especially considering the context and culture of its various authors. The person of Jesus is a conundrum to Jewish culture. He didn’t fit the mold of a Jewish Messiah. So why would these Jewish authors create a fictional story surrounding a Jewish man who broke cultural norms of the day, but yet was also the promised Messiah? It doesn’t make any sense!

Walking through point after impactful point, Mr. D’Virgilio describes countless examples of how Jesus’ actions do not represent the ideals of Jewish culture, further solidifying the idea that the Bible could not be an invented or imagined document. It would make no sense for these Jewish authors to write the story of the promised Messiah in such a manner. But that’s not all!

Jesus’ actions did not match up with what would be expected of someone trying to start a movement. From promoting abstaining from fleshly desires to advising people to sell all worldly possessions, Jesus was counter cultural in every sense of the word. Why would a group of men conspire to create a story so opposed to the Jewish perception of the coming Messiah? Mr. D’Vigilio’s explanation brings light to these questions like never before.

This conversation is absolutely fascinating, and Mr. D’Vigilio’s love and passion for Scripture make it a must watch. So be sure to grab your Bibles, and follow along as we dive into the “Uninvented” Word of God!

A.I. Clones. Robots. 

These are all very scary words to many. The idea of technology becoming so powerful that it can imitate, relate to, and possibly even overtake humans one day is a concept that is not lost on your average science fiction film lover. But that’s all stuff that’s really just confined to those post-apocalyptic world movies, right?

Well, according to Pastor Emilio Ramos in the Creation Today show, “Transhumanism: Resistance is Futile”, the threat of ever-improving technology is real, and should be the new apologetic focus of believers today. An important clarification to this point that Pastor Ramos points out is that technology, with moral applications, can be a very helpful tool. In his own words, “The same technology that built the temple of God built the tower of Babel. It’s not about the technology. What matters is the worldview behind it.”

So what is the worldview of the transhumanists who are running this technological race towards a global community of A.I. powered technology? Pastor Ramos says one answer is the evolutionary worldview. According to supporters of Darwin’s theory, all humans really are is a series of computations, void of any soul. If this is true, in the eyes of transhumanists, using technology so that we can evolve into more complicated computations presents no moral or ethical issues.

But this worldview and those who hold to it are fundamentally anti-Christ. They have no regard for God or the Christian worldview other than to make a mockery of Christianity. And mock they do. In this race towards transhumanism, plans for implantable technology, miracle technology, and predictive programming models all tell the same story of man thinking his design is better than God’s.

If those terms are new to you, then you definitely need to take some time to watch this fascinating, frightening, but ultimately encouraging show that teaches the reality of transhumanism and rapidly-evolving technology but reminds us of the truth of trusting in God’s sovereignty over all.

What comes to your mind when I say the word, “science”? For me, it’s beakers, lab coats, and strangely-colored chemicals whose names are hard to pronounce. Maybe you had similar thoughts, and, if so, you would be thinking about observational science.

On the flip side, maybe you thought about origins of the world or archaeologists digging up bones and ancient artifacts. If so, then you, my friend, would be thinking about historical science.

In the Creation Today show, “Forensics: Science of the Past”, Dr. Jennifer Hall Rivera explains the difference between these two types of science and why it’s important to know in relation to forensics. According to Dr. Rivera, historical science refers to the study of something that is unobservable in the original form, like, for example, a crime. (Are you starting to see now why we brought on a forensic scientist to talk about this?)

In the words of Dr. Rivera, “forensic science can very much be compared to something like the study of fossils.” If we started to look at the study of origins more like the way forensic scientists look at studying a crime scene, we would find that questions surrounding the beginning and evolution all suddenly become so much clearer.

For example, Dr. Rivera breaks down so many amazing science-y things such as DNA, hair analysis, and fingerprints, but her main focus is on teaching how the forensic (historical) study of these fields of observational science provide direct confirmation of the truth of God’s Word. Touching on everything from the vast differences between the physical characteristics of humans and animals to the concrete testimony of God’s Word, Dr. Rivera leaves no stone unturned. When you hear her section on fingerprints, your jaw will drop!

The Bible says that God is a true and faithful Witness, so, very technically speaking, we do not need evidence to prove that God’s account is true. But the cool part is, we have direct confirmation of and evidence that backs up the Biblical account, and Dr. Rivera does an incredible job explaining this concept. If you want to channel your inner detective and learn science at the same time, you’re going to want to take some time to watch this fun and engaging show.

How often do you think about the moon? For most of us, the heavenly body of the night is only a passing thought every once in a blue moon (pun-intended); perhaps when you experience a particularly beautiful evening or when you see a full moon. However, according to Dr. Don DeYoung in the newest Creation Today show, “The Moon: Evidence of a Young Creation”, the moon serves several distinct and important purposes that should compel people to think about it far more often.

Besides the more commonly-known services the moon provides, such as light throughout the night, and telling time and direction based on its phases, Dr. DeYoung explains some of the incredible purposes of the moon that impact our daily lives. From protection of the earth to the changing of seasons, the moon is an important player in so many aspects of life on earth.

One fascinating example of this is found in how much of an impact the ocean tides have on our lives. The tides help keep the ocean healthy by keeping the waters stirred up, which is commonly referred to as currents. Currents help redistribute nutrients and oxygen to the ocean plants, which make up approximately half of the oxygen we breathe. Therefore, as Dr. DeYoung puts it, if there was no moon, there would be no tides, and the ocean would be stagnant. If the ocean was stagnant, then the ocean plants would die, and so would we.

After explaining how vital the moon is to our very survival, Dr. DeYoung clarifies that there could be dozens more reasons for the moon that are known only to God. We are slowly unwrapping the secrets of creation, and that includes the moon! However, we do know that the moon is a faithful witness of God’s creativity and sovereignty over all. So if you want to learn more about God’s character, be sure to schedule time into your week to enjoy this fun and educational show.

Are any of you a fan of “Back to the Future”, “Quantum Leap”, or “Ant Man”? These films all share at least one component in common – quantum physics. I know, I know, try to hold onto your excitement and confetti because we have to focus in order to understand this deep dive of a show. In “Does Nature Reveal God?”, Dr. Doug Corrigan takes us on a journey through just a few of the characteristics of light and how they reflect some of the attributes of God. 

Using Albert Einstein’s theory of special relativity, Dr. Corrigan explains the physics of light, starting simple with a fun illustration using a red and blue car. There’s so much to unpack even with that one little illustration, so I’ll leave it to the expert, but, ultimately, Dr. Corrigan explains how the speed of light is absolute, unlike anything else. You can never reach it, change it, or make anything like it – much like how you can never reach the level of, change, or create God. God is absolute, and so is light. 

If you’re a bit puzzled right now, don’t worry. Dr. Corrigan explains it far better than I can. Throughout the show, he presents fact after mind-blowing fact that shows the qualities God designed in light that reflect His character. From being timeless to infinite to omnipresent and more, light is a beautiful reflection of its designer. Call it, art reflecting the artist, if you will.

In Genesis 1, God created the heavens and the earth, and the first thing He spoke into existence was light. (“And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” [Gen. 1:2b-3]) What a beautiful picture of God’s intention for creation! Everything He created exists to bring Him glory, and His first creation in the universe was something that reflects Him perfectly, in a beautifully mysterious way.

Although this show is a deeper dive than most, Dr. Corrigan manages to make this introduction to quantum physics a fascinating study, and one that you will want to watch again and again to fully grasp the concept. So grab your pens and notebooks, get comfortable, and take all the time you need to watch this eye-opening show.

Take a moment and imagine a world where there is gold scattered beneath every inch of the earth’s surface, and everyone knows that it is there. But the catch? No one is willing to dig through the mud and dirt to find the buried treasure.

Sounds like a crazy world, right? But what if I told you that we live in a world much like the one we just imagined together? This week, during the second installment of “Does the Bible Contradict Itself?,” Dr. Tim Chaffey says that skeptics have been asking questions about alleged Bible contradictions for years, but they aren’t willing to dig for the answers that have been there all along. The tendency has been to pull verses out of context and put them in the worst possible light instead of trying to find a reasonable explanation.

Like last week, Dr. Chaffey walks through more common “contradictions” critics point to in the Bible, like the number of kinds Noah brought on the ark, whether or not Joshua and the Israelites captured Jerusalem, and who the father of Joseph, husband of Mary, was. He even pointed out that the question of who Joseph’s father was has been around for 1,700 years or more, and the answer is just as old! I guess the people of the internet aren’t as original as they thought. But I digress.

The cherry on top of this episode, however, was the nine principles Dr. Chaffey recommends when approaching alleged contradictions in the Bible. I won’t spoil the list for you, but one of the principles was that the easy answer may not be the best answer. Dr. Chaffey challenges believers to seek knowledge and dig into God’s Word personally when confronted with confusing verses that can seem contradictory. Answering supposed contradictions is not always a simple task. It requires a genuine search for truth, not just a quick listen to sound bites from an internet “scholar” that supports your belief.

If you want to learn more about how to respond to skeptics and even find answers for your own questions, make sure to schedule a time to sit down and watch this show. And be sure to bring a pen and paper, because you won’t want to forget any of this valuable information.

Have you heard the common paradox, “If God can do anything, can He create a rock that He is unable to lift?”

You may have dismissed this question as trivial, or maybe you struggled with the idea that the God of the Bible is not who the Bible claims He is. This struggle may have led you down a rabbit hole of finding other puzzling questions about God and the Bible, ultimately leaving you searching for solid answers. Well, don’t fear, my friend, because we have just the show for you!

For several years, critics have claimed that contradictions in certain Biblical doctrines, church denominations, and in the Bible itself are proof that the Word of God is not the divinely inspired, infallible text it claims to be. However, this argument falls apart under closer scrutiny, and, in this week’s show, “Does the Bible Contradict Itself? (Part One),” Dr. Tim Chaffey highlights some important counterarguments every believer should know.

For years, when it comes to this issue, an unfortunate standard practice in the church is to teach that the Bible is infallible, but neglect to equip believers to answer questions from those who disagree. Dr. Chaffey argues that the truth of the Bible, although not able to be fully proved with scientific certainty, is a well-reasoned belief. From fulfilled prophecies to significant archaeological evidence, so much of the Bible has been proven to be trustworthy.

According to Dr. Chaffey, alleged contradictions in the text fail to recognize proper context, and are not issues that would in any way disprove Christianity. Still, he walks through several common questions and misperceptions about the Bible, covering topics such as the Sabbath day and the omnipotence of God. And he even discussed the “God and the immovable rock” paradox.

Ultimately, Dr. Chaffey explains that alleged Bible contradictions often are the result of confusing God’s infallible revelation with humans’ fallible interpretations. As Christians, we should be very careful about how we read and interpret the Scriptures so we don’t fall into the contradiction trap. If I were to ask you to name a religion that is widely viewed as the one associated with acts of terror and violence, you would most likely answer, “Islam.” Many of us would agree with that answer and possibly engage in a short yet nuanced discussion about how not all Muslims are terrorists and so on and so forth. 

However, this conversation would fail to recognize some of the most important aspects of Islam that are part of the cause for this widespread view of the religion. Thankfully, longtime contributor to AnsweringIslam.org and AnsweringMuslims.com, Pastor Anthony Rogers points out and explains these aspects in the Creation Today Show, “World Religions: Who’s Right…Islam?”

Pastor Rogers quotes several verses from the Qur’an, the Muslim holy text, that show how Islam is inherently a religion of terror, ever-changing standards of morality, and ultimately, demonic influence. From Muhammad’s early life, to his supposed initial revelation from “Allah,” all the way until his death, Pastor Rogers traces the impact of the devil and demonic activity in the Islamic religion.

One of the most fascinating examples of this influence is found in the text of the Qur’an itself. Both Surah 3:54 and Surah 8:30 claim that Allah is “the best of all deceivers.” Not only that, but a close friend of Muhammad is quoted as saying, “Even if I had one foot in paradise, I would still fear Allah’s deception.”

The Bible teaches that Satan is the father of all lies (John 8:44). These descriptions of liars are strikingly similar, and present hard to refute evidence that, as Pastor Anthony Rogers puts it, Islam is a religion of terror, not peace. If I were to count the number of times the skeptics in my comments argued that the creationist position doesn’t have any legitimate science and scientists backing it up, I would probably be counting until I’m at least 100 years old!

In the Creation Today show, “Latest Research from Creation Science,” Dr. Brian Thomas from the Institute for Creation Research noted, “We have decades of great research, but so few people know about it. Creationists keep digging deeper to find more and more information, but the average person doesn’t know about the fifty plus years of research we already have.” 

Thankfully, this week’s show was filled with the brilliant minds of creation scientists from around the world who described some of the most compelling evidence for Young Earth Creation. In the words of Dr. Marcus Ross, a paleontologist and Liberty University assistant professor of geology, “Creation research is alive, vibrant, and exciting. Why? Because God is exciting!” 

In honor of this excitement, I had the pleasure of attending the International Creation Conference and interviewing several incredible scientists who gave brilliant presentations on everything from the inaccuracies in radiocarbon dating to the energy and efficiency of human DNA, which is far more efficient than any iPhone, Professor Andy McIntosh pointed out. And the research doesn’t stop there! You might want to grab a pen and some paper because the amount of knowledge shared in just the hour of interview clips in this show is astounding. You can only imagine how much scientific evidence I was absorbing throughout the conference and during the three plus hours of individual interviews I was filming!

Another interesting aspect I discovered at the conference was how much these scientists will go back and forth with ideas, and not always end up agreeing! But that is the beauty of science – it cannot advance if everyone agrees. Healthy debate and discussion is what pushes research to become better and more accurate. Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine something with me. You are standing in your front yard, looking in shock and confusion at massive holes that your son dug all around the yard as he was “looking for buried treasure.” When you finally regain your ability to form words, the phrase, “What were you thinking?” is all that comes out. With a shrug, your son replies, “I don’t know.”

Now what if I told you that there is a scientific explanation for this imaginary scenario? On the Creation Today show “Science of the Brain: Men vs Women”, Mrs. Holly Varnum explains the fascinating science behind that very idea. If you have ever wondered about the science behind how men can quite literally think about nothing, or why your wife gets nervous when you don’t press the brake as soon as the red light comes into view, this is the show for you!

Mrs. Varnum discusses how the lack of connections in an adolescent male’s frontal lobe and the less-than-desirable amount of connections in an adolescent female’s occipital lobe contribute to these somehow universal predicaments. But don’t worry if those big words just scared you a little bit. Mrs. Varnum made several very helpful slides and graphics that make understanding this topic significantly easier. Listening to her, you won’t believe how fun it is to look at a brain scan! The differences are astounding.

Throughout the show, Mrs. Varnum also touches on some fun facts about those differences. For example, the female brain is not fully developed until between the ages of twenty and twenty-five years old; but the male brain is not fully developed until around thirty years of age. Do with that information what you will.

The Big Bang theory has been accepted by a majority of scientists today. Therefore, this is worth investigating, right? So let’s take a peek into the science of what these scientists claim.

Who Started the Big Bang Idea?

The originators included George Lemaitre, a Belgian, who struck on the basic idea in 1927; and George Gamow, R.A. Alpher, and R. Herman who devised the basic Big Bang model in 1948. But it was Gamow, a well-known scientist and science fiction writer, that gave it its present name and popularized it. ¹ Campaigning for the idea enthusiastically, he was able to convince many other scientists of its validity. He used quaint little cartoons to emphasize the details, and the cartoons really helped sell the theory.

What Is the Big Bang Theory?

According to this theory, in the beginning, there was no matter, just nothingness. Then this nothingness condensed by gravity into a single, tiny spot and decided to explode. That explosion produced protons, neutrons, and electrons which flowed outward at incredible speed throughout empty space, for there was no other matter in the universe.

As these protons, neutrons, and electrons hurled themselves outward at supersonic speed, they are said to have formed themselves into typical atomic structures of mutually orbiting hydrogen and helium atoms. Gradually, the outward-racing atoms are said to have begun circling one another, producing gas clouds which then pushed together into stars.

These first stars only contained lighter elements (hydrogen and helium), then all of the stars repeatedly exploded. It took at least two explosions of each star to produce our heavier elements. Gamow described it in scientific terms: “In violation of physical laws, emptiness fled from the vacuum of space and rushed into a super dense core that had a density of 1094 gm/cm<2 and a temperature in excess of 1039 degrees absolute.” 

Where did this “superdense core” come from? Gamow solemnly came up with a scientific answer for this, too. He said it came as a result of “the big squeeze” when the emptiness made up its mind to crowd together. Then, with true scientific self-assurance, he named this solid core of nothing, “ylem” (pronounced “ee-lum”). With a name like that, many people thought this must be a great scientific breakthrough. In addition, he added numbers to give the theory an additional scientific flair. This remarkable lack-of-anything was said by Gamow to have a density of 10145 g/cc, or one hundred trillion times the density of water. What happened next?

All that packed-in blankness went boom! That is the theory. 

While some hold dearly to it, here are just a few of the scientific reasons why the Big Bang Theory is unscientific, unworkable, and logically unsound.

DENSITY — NOT!

Nothingness cannot pack together. It would have no way to push itself into a pile.

It is said that the nothingness got very dense, and that is why it exploded. But a total vacuum is the opposite of total density. A vacuum has no density. Truly, Big Bang Theorists, that is a lot of density for a gigantic pile of nothingness! 

At this maximum radius the density of ordinary matter would have been 10-12 grm/m3, over 1016 times as great as the present mass density. No stars could have formed in such a Universe, for it would not have existed long enough to form stars.”[R.H. Dickey, Gravitation and the Universe (1969), p. 62]

EXPLOSION — NOT!

There would be no ignition to explode nothingness. No fire and no match. It could not be a chemical explosion, for no chemicals existed. It could not be a nuclear explosion, for there were no atoms.

EXPANSION — NOT!

There is no way to expand it. How can you expand what isn’t there? Even if that magical vacuum could somehow be pulled together by gravity, what would then cause the pile of emptiness to push outward? The “gravity” which brought it together would prohibit it from expanding.

One example of this is the expansion of the original fireball from the Big Bang, which they place precisely within the narrowest of limits. An evolutionist astronomer R.H. Dicke says it well: “If the fireball had expanded only 0.1 percent faster, the present rate of expansion would have been 3 x 103 times as great. Had the initial expansion rate been 0.1 percent less, the Universe would have expanded to only 3 x 10, a mere 6% of its present radius before collapsing. [R.H. Dickey, Gravitation and the Universe (1969), p. 62]

HEAT — NOT!

Nothingness cannot produce heat. The intense heat caused by the exploding nothingness is said to have changed the nothingness into protons, neutrons, and electrons. First remember that an empty vacuum in the extreme cold of outer space cannot get hot by itself. Second, an empty void cannot magically change itself into matter. Third, there can be no heat without an energy source.

Big Bang Theorists must believe in miracles for a humongous pile of nothingness to produce heat. This is especially true when we realize that it is impossible for nothing to get hot. Air does get hot, but air is matter, not an absence of it.

CALCULATIONS — NOT!

The Big Bang calculations to produce a “perfect explosion” require too exacting mathematical equations. On many points, the theoretical mathematical calculations needed to turn a Big Bang into stars and our planet cannot be worked out; in others they are too exacting. Knowledgeable scientists call them “too perfect.” Mathematical limitations would have to be met which would be next to impossible to achieve. The limits for success are simply too narrow.  

 Such an equation would have produced not a universe but a hole. *Roger L. St. Peter in 1974 developed a complicated mathematical equation that showed that the theorized Big Bang could not have exploded outward into hydrogen and helium. In reality, St. Peter says the theoretical explosion (if one could possibly take place) would fall back on itself and make a theoretical black hole! This means that one imaginary object would swallow another one!

Gamow’s theory may look good in math calculations, but it can’t actually happen. A tiny bit of nothing packed so tightly together that it blew up and produced all the matter in the universe? Seriously now, this is a fairy tale. Though theorized on paper, in reality, it is a bunch of armchair calculations, and nothing else.

ANTIMATTER — NOT!

There is not enough antimatter in the universe. This is a big problem for the theorists. The original Big Bang would have produced equal amounts of positive matter (matter) and negative matter (antimatter). Yet only small amounts of antimatter exist. If the Big Bang Theory were true, there should be just as much antimatter as matter. “Since matter and antimatter are equivalent in all respects but that of electromagnetic charge oppositeness, any force [the Big Bang] that would create one should have to create the other, and the universe should be made of equal quantities of each. This is a dilemma. Theory tells us there should be antimatter out there, but observation refuses to back it up.”[Isaac Asimov, Asimov’sNew Guide to Science, p. 343] “We are pretty sure from our observations that the universe today contains matter, but very little if any antimatter.”[Victor Weisskopf, “The Origin of the Universe,” American Scientist, 71, p. 479]

The antimatter from the Big Bang would have destroyed all the regular matter. This fact is well-known to physicists. As soon as the two are produced in the laboratory, they instantly come together and annihilate one another.

Conclusion

The Big Bang theory is based on theoretical extremes that would actually produce a black hole, not a universe. Scientists can and should theorize. However, the fact remains that the Big Bang Theory has never been seen and there is no definitive evidence that it ever happened. Let’s not mistake Disneyland fairytale theories for science.

It all sounds like something you might find in a science fiction novel. And that is all it is. The theory stands in clear violation of physical laws, celestial mechanics, and common sense. 

Hmmm . . .  Density, Explosion, Expansion, Heat, Calculations, Antimatter: These Big Bang Theory aspects are impossible, and some demand parameters that would require miracles to fulfill. All these provide BIG PROBLEMS for the BIG BANG Theorists who vehemently deny the supernatural but seem to have a lot of faith in miracles!

Some of the most well-known myths tell a compelling story of a struggle between good and evil; light and dark; heroes and villains. In the Creation Today show “The Bible vs. Greek Mythology” we discuss these myths with Dr. Louis Markos – an author and English professor at Houston Christian University. He dives into the world of mythology and how the similarities in the Biblical account point to the truth of God’s Word.

So, what does the story of something like Pandora’s box have in common with the Biblical account of Adam and Eve? Pandora’s box is the story of the first woman (Pandora) created by the Greek gods. She was given a box with instructions never to open it. But when the gods were out of sight, Pandora opened the lid and let out all the evils of the world.

Now think back to Genesis and the account of Adam and Eve. Eve, the first woman, was told never to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But she disobeyed, ate the fruit, and gave it to her husband, Adam, also. As a result, sin entered the world. Sound familiar?

Dr. Markos details the parallels between many more myths and Biblical accounts. The similarities are astounding! But it brings up the question: which is true? If the Biblical accounts sound like many of the myths we know, does that mean the Bible is also a myth? Dr. Markos says the answer is a resounding NO!

These pagan myths ask questions that the Bible answers. The stories give readers an understanding of forbidden knowledge and a fall. But the culmination of all these stories is Christ! The analogy Dr. Markos gives is that mythology is like a candle, but the Bible is like the sun. The candle gives us a glimpse of what the true light – the sun – provides. This means Jesus not only fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies, but also fulfilled the highest longings of the pagan people.

So, did the Bible steal from Greek mythology? No. It brought clarity and meaning by telling the compelling TRUE story of good vs. evil; light vs. dark; and hero vs. villain.

Young Earth? Old Earth? Allow me to share a part of my journey on this subject. One day, I was talking with a good friend about the age of the earth. My friend believed that one of the Gap Theories was a reasonable possibility. According to this particular Gap Theory, a great expanse of time passed between the first two sentences of Genesis. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Then here, some Gap Theory proponents say that God created the angels, and after billions of years, the angels fell, bringing darkness and chaos on the earth.) “And the earth was without form and void.” That’s the story as some tell it, but I didn’t buy into it because that story usually claims that the geological layers are from that Gap Period. If that were true, then the account of Noah and the Flood is mainly fiction. If Noah and the Worldwide Flood are fictional, we couldn’t accept the Bible as true as it’s written.

I told my friend that I had researched the age of the earth carefully and found no evidence in either Scripture or scientific observation that points to billions of years of earth history; and furthermore, it seemed that the Gap Theory was an attempt to make Scripture agree with the consensus of the scientists. However, scientists base their consensus on circular reasoning, and the only reason the scientists have any agreement on this issue is they would lose their jobs if they didn’t agree. It’s a consensus through coercion. I continued to explain that the fall of Satan could have happened in one afternoon, as there is no reason to assume it would take a long time. Additionally,  we don’t know anything about how time passes in the heavenly realm compared to earth time, and we already know that time is relative based on scientific observation.

I closed my argument by providing the absolute proof against billions of years in the Gap with a quote by Jesus. Jesus said, “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” I demonstrated my point by holding out my arms and saying, “Consider a timeline with the beginning at my left hand and the present at my right hand. Adam and Eve are at the beginning (as I wiggled the fingers of my left hand). Now, stick in a Gap of billions of years over here (left hand fingers wiggle). Then the billions of years are the space between my hands, and Adam and Eve aren’t at the beginning but at the end (right hand fingers wiggle). Yet Jesus said they were at the beginning and not the end.”

Being Mr. Humble Pie Congeniality, I went on to say that billions of years could possibly exist somewhere since it’s possible there might be something I didn’t know. I was pretty proud that I was so open-minded on the subject and didn’t mind admitting I could be wrong to my gap-theory embracing friend.

THEN THE LIGHTS FLIPPED ON!

Then my friend shouted, “WAIT! NO, THEY COULDN’T! Billions of years could not exist between the first two sentences!” 

Suddenly it hit me, too, and I had my own moment to “wake up and smell the coffee.” Since God created Adam and Eve in the beginning of creation, there is no possible place for deep time because the earth is only about six-thousand years old. It was a moment of surprise for both of us, and suddenly we began laughing. In an instant, the Holy Spirit turned my friend and I 180 degrees to see the truth in the same way. Though my friend and I were not coming from the same starting point, the Holy Spirit brought light to the matter with a finality neither of us could deny. Amazing how the Holy Spirit taught us both that day that there couldn’t be a billions-of-years-gap in the first verse of the Bible! 

THE BIBLE IS GOD’S WORD WITHOUT ERROR.

Let me be clear. Trusting that any old-earth theology or theory (including the gap theory) could be true would require us to throw out the Bible’s accuracy. We can’t do that. We know the Bible is God’s Word without error because the Holy Spirit reveals this fact to us and speaks to us through His Written Word. 

BUT DOESN’T DISTANT STARLIGHT PROVE BILLIONS OF YEARS?

Some people ask how God could get distant starlight to where we can see it without billions of years for it to travel. After all, since stars are billions of light-years away, simple math would say that starlight would take billions of years to get to the earth. Answering this conundrum, the fact that the earth is only a few thousand years old doesn’t mean billions of years could not have passed in the heavens. Several cosmologies that work better than the Big Bang Cosmology answer this distant-starlight problem. Humphreys’ Time Dilation Cosmology suggests that billions of years could have passed in the heavens while no time passed on the earth. You can read about that here. TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE JESUS’ STATEMENT ABOUT THE BEGINNING.

Let’s look more closely into Jesus’ statement about the beginning since it’s the most convincing proof of a young earth. Jesus’ statement makes old earth theologies impossible to believe without doing incredible mental gymnastics with Scripture. Given this Scripture, if anyone tries to say, as I had, deep time is possible in Genesis 1, they could use that same “logic” to reinterpret or add anything to any part of Scripture. There would be no limit to their imagination in creating their own Bible and their own “religion.” Here is Jesus’ statement recorded in two passages of Scripture.

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. ~ Mark 10:6 King James Version

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? ~ Matthew 19:4 King James Version

What follows is a diagram showing the two timelines I described to my friend using my arms and fingers. The first one shows the timeline defined in the Bible.

The second diagram shows the timeline defined by the Gap Theory. You may miss the thin red line at the far right end of the timeline. That line represents all the time from God creating Adam and Eve to the present day!

Jesus said that God made Adam and Eve at the beginning of creation. All old-earth arguments put Adam and Eve at the end of creation which conflicts with the words of Jesus Christ. That’s why I can now see that these theories are wrong. Why do billions of years inserted into the historical biblical text matter? Young-age-of-the-earth-doubts are a big deal because they are one of the main reasons (or excuses) why people turn from their faith and distrust the Bible. Let’s make no attempt to rewrite the Bible, nor to give unbelievers any reason to doubt the authenticity of Scripture!

Our Creation Today Show titled, “Is Historical Adam a Myth?” with Eric Hovind and Dr. Tim Chaffey focuses on Dr. William Lane Craig’s new book “In Quest of the Historical Adam.” This new book argues Adam and Eve were folklore, or “mytho history,” rather than real human beings recorded in the historical narrative found in Genesis. He further proffers that they could have evolved. His new idea attempts to combine a little bit of Evolution, all of the Old Earth interpretations of modern science, and some other stuff he has made up on the way. It is yet another version of Theistic Evolution which tries to reinterpret Scripture through the lens of man’s current scientific beliefs.

Theistic Evolution Undermines The Truthfulness of the Bible.

When it comes to understanding why theistic evolution is the wrong compromise for Christians to make in order to accommodate modern scientific ideas such as evolution, the very truthfulness of the Bible is at stake. Dr. Wayne Grudem shares what we can expect to see when we deny the historicity of the first three chapters of Genesis:

“In addition, theistic evolution requires us to believe that both Jesus and the New Testament authors were wrong in their affirmations of the historical reliability of many details in Genesis 1 – 3. More specifically, theistic evolution requires us to believe that passages in Matthew, Luke, Acts, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Colossians, 1 Timothy, Hebrews, and Revelation were all in error in what they affirmed about Genesis 1 – 3. This is much deeper than a challenge to the historicity of one verse or another. This is a challenge to the truthfulness of three foundational chapters of the entire Bible, and to the truthfulness of ten of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament.”1

Once we begin to lose the truthfulness of the Scriptures, it is only a matter of time before the entire Christian faith begins to unravel. If we deny the historical nature of Genesis 1-3 the question naturally arises as to just when does Genesis turn from figurative language to historical narrative. Again, Grudem sums up this entire idea when he states: “Even if there were no other harmful consequences from this theory, this alone would be sufficient to conclude that theistic evolution is not a viewpoint that Christians should accept.”2 As we can see theories can have far reaching implications and in the case of theistic evolution the very doctrine of the inerrancy of the Bible is at stake.

Theistic Evolution Calls the Wisdom of God into Question.

Grudem forcefully makes this point when he states: “Theistic evolution undermines the glory given to God for his unfathomable wisdom in the creation of all living things, because in theistic evolution no divine intelligence or wisdom beyond the properties present in inanimate matter is required for matter to evolve into all forms of life.”3 He goes on to add: “In addition, in theistic evolution God does not wisely create various kinds of animals on his first attempt, but clumsily, by his providence, brings about millions of failed mutations in each creature before he finds a beneficial change.”4 And just how can we reconcile this idea of God needing “millions of failed mutations” with (Psalm 139:14): “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” 

The questions before us are these: Could blind chance have created the magnificence we see in man today? Could random collisions have created genius? And could mindless matter have generated the marvelous minds we possess today? According to theistic evolutionists, inanimate matter was somehow given God’s wisdom to transform itself, without using any wisdom at all, into the beauty we see all around us in nature up to and including man. This indeed is a hard pill to swallow and believe.

Theistic Evolution Contradicts the Creation Account.

Theistic evolution contradicts just about everything traditional Christianity holds dear about the creation account in the first three chapters of Genesis. We have already shown that theistic evolution places death before the fall of man. In addition, the idea of dust to Adam and rib to Eve is allegorized. Death, which the Bible views as an enemy, is viewed by theistic evolutionists as a necessary ally in the creation process. It claims that Adam and Eve were never sinless human beings, that Adam and Eve were not the first human beings, and perhaps they never even existed. 

This last point is critical, for if Adam and Eve are not historical people then what about other people in the Bible. According to Dr. John A. Bloom: “And if we think that Adam and Eve are mythical, who else is? Noah? Abraham? Moses? Samuel? David? Such skepticism towards the historical accounts in early Genesis, and elsewhere by extension of the same methods, is typical of liberal theology, which historically evangelicals opposed.”5 When creation concepts are called into question and not viewed as historical in nature then even Jesus got it wrong because he clearly viewed Genesis 1 – 3 as historical in nature.

Theistic Evolution Losses the Way for Finding God.

In order to find one’s way to God, it is crucial that we realize that we are sinful creatures who desperately need a savior. Since theistic evolutionists don’t even acknowledge that we have inherited Adam and Eve’s original sin nature, the question becomes, how can we find our way back to God if we don’t realize we are desperate sinners? Dr. Werner Gitt sums up this dilemma as follows: “However, evolution knows no sin in the biblical sense of missing one’s purpose (in relation to God). Sin is made meaningless, and that is exactly the opposite of what the Holy Spirit does—He declares sin to be sinful. If sin is seen as a harmless evolutionary factor, then one has lost the key for finding God, which is not resolved by adding ‘God’ to the evolutionary scenario.”6

Theistic Evolution Provokes the Believer to Accept Extreme, Far-Reaching  Concessions.

Theistic evolution is a bad compromise for Christians to make because once we make this concession, the implications are extremely alarming

In reality, theistic evolution is no different from atheistic evolution. The only difference is that God is added to the equation. As we have shown in this short series, many historical Christian doctrines are compromised once we let go of the historical underpinnings of the first three chapters of Genesis.  Werner Gitt assesses the situation well when he says:

“Thus, a belief system such as theistic evolution that marries purposefulness with non-purposefulness is a contradiction in terms.” 7

Perhaps John Bloom shares what the ultimate outcome is for those who carry theistic evolution to its logical conclusion when he states:

“If God did not even guide the evolutionary process, how is God sovereign over His creation? Did God intentionally make us in His image? If humans gradually evolved, and our sinfulness ismerely the inherent selfishness resulting from a Darwinian process, then human history is progress, not corruption; so shouldn’t humans ultimately be good enough not to need a savior?”8

Without a doubt, the implications of the Theistic Evolution view yields disastrous results in the ultimate authority of God’s Word, the sinful nature of mankind, the very nature of God, and throws away the need for the redemptive work accomplished by the risen Savior. Maybe its proponents should reexamine this wrong compromise for the believer.

Theistic Evolution Implications Are Far-Reaching.

As I hope to now substantiate, the arguments against theistic evolution are much more grounded in the Scriptures than the arguments of its proponents. In addition, the creation vs evolution controversy is far too important to just gloss over because of the major doctrinal implications a faulty view of creation carries with it. Professor and Chair of Biblical Studies at RTS University, Dr. John D. Currid sums up the implications issue well when he states: “If we remove the profoundly historical nature of Genesis 1-3, we will remove the historical foundation on which all the remainder of the Bible rests.”1

Theistic Evolution Destroys the Basis of the Gospel Message.

Since theistic evolution denies that Genesis 1-3 is a historical narrative of the events of creation, many of the foundational doctrines of the New Testament are severely undermined. Two examples concern the atonement and the resurrection; both of which if undermined destroy the message of the cross. The problem for theistic evolutionists is that if we deny a historical Adam then we must deny that sin came into the world through Adam.

But this clearly contradicts (Romans 5:12) which states: “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.” Thus, theistic evolution denies the doctrine of original sin. But we also read in (Romans 5:19): “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.” Thus, the parallel with Christ being the second Adam, who came on the scene to be our atonement for sin, doesn’t work or make any sense. As a result, the doctrine of the atonement is severely undermined.

When it comes to the resurrection of Christ we read in I Corinthians 15:21-22: “For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” Dr. Wayne Grudem, theologian, professor, and author, sums up the problem relating the resurrection to a non-literal Adam well when he states: “However, if we deny that death came into the world through Adam, and if we deny the unity of the human race as descending from Adam, then once again the parallel between Adam and Christ does not work. In this way, theistic evolution undermines the effectiveness of the resurrection to give new life to all who are saved by Christ.”2

Once we undermine both the atonement and the resurrection, we also undermine the need for a Savior. So, you can see that once we strip away the historicity of Genesis 1-3 and the idea of a literal Adam and Eve a host of crucial biblical doctrines begin to crumble. So many of the doctrines of Scripture depend on Genesis 1-3 being literally and historically interpreted that the very truthfulness of the entire Bible comes into question when we begin to treat these pivotal chapters as poetic, allegorical, and figuratively.

Theistic Evolution Misrepresents the Nature of God.

When God created our world, the Bible describes His work as very good. However, if one holds to the theory of theistic evolution then we are left with a process of death leading up to the creation of man. Dr. Werner Gitt shares the following thought: “Theistic evolution gives a false representation of the nature of God because death and ghastliness are ascribed to the Creator as principles of creation.” 3

Does it make sense that a God, who is all good and all powerful, would use the mechanism of death to bring about humanity? Is this the nature of God?  Ken Ham paints a picture of what the God of theistic evolution must have done to create mankind: “Evolution teaches that for millions of years before man, things have lived and died. They have fought and struggled, killed and been killed. It was a world without mercy – ‘nature red in tooth and claw.’ This history of evolution is a history of death. Death has been ‘from the beginning.’”4  Ken Ham then sums up the twisted state of affairs when we bring evolution into the picture when he says: “Evolution says death plus struggle brought man into existence; the Bible says man’s actions led to sin, which led to death. These two are totally contradictory.”5 

It also doesn’t seem to be in the nature of God, nor is it even possible, that he would guide or direct an unguided and undirected process, a mechanism which most theistic evolutionists contend.  Dr. Stephen C. Meyer shows us how impossible this is when he states: “Logically, no intelligent being – not even God – can direct an undirected process. As soon as he directs it, the ‘undirected’ process would no longer be undirected.”6

Theistic Evolution: The Wrong Compromise — Part I

When one opens up the BioLogos website we are confronted with the following statement: “BioLogos invites the church and the world to see the harmony between science and biblical faith as we present an evolutionary understanding of God’s creation.”[1] Another name for what BioLogos supports is theistic evolution. But just what is theistic evolution? 

Though he does not agree with the mindset, Prolific author and Seminary Professor Dr. Wayne Grudem gives a good definition of what those who embrace this hybrid believe: “God created matter, and after that He did not guide or intervene or act directly to cause any empirically detectable change in the natural behavior of matter until all living things had evolved by purely natural processes.”[2] Another definition says that theistic evolution is, “the idea that God, over immense periods of time, used evolutionary processes to create all physical life-forms from a single organism.”[3]

The question before us is, can we, as Christians, hold to both creation and evolution; or in the words of BioLogos, is there a place for an evolutionary understanding of God’s creation?

After examining all the evidence, I hope to show that theistic evolution is the wrong compromise for Christians to m

ake; because, like fire and ice, the Bible and evolution don’t mix. First, let’s examine some reasons in support of the doctrine of theistic evolution.

Many Scientists Believe in Evolution.

Ever since Darwin, there has been a consensus among scientists that evolution is an established fact. This approval started fairly early after Darwin proposed his evolutionary thesis and continues to the present. According to Karl Giberson: “By 1875, evolution had been established as a historical fact to the satisfaction of most scientists as well as educated people who had taken the time to absorb Darwin’s argument.”[4] Francis Collins feels that this is also the case among some Christian scientists. He shares: “Yet theistic evolution is the dominant position of serious biologists who are also serious believers.”[5]

    

The Catholic Church Endorses Theistic Evolution.

Over the last fifty years, the Catholic Church has moved more and more to supporting the idea of theistic evolution. Francis Collins echoes this idea when he states: “Pope John Paul II in his message to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1996 offered a particularly thoughtful and courageous defense of theistic evolution. The pope stated that ‘new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis.’”[6] 

Some Claim That Genesis 1-3 Was Never Intended to be Taken Literally.

Most people in the theistic evolution camp deny that the genre of Genesis 1-3 is that of historical narrative. Instead, they contend that these chapters are either poetic, figurative, or allegorical in nature and were never meant to be interpreted as historical. As a result of this position, the idea that Adam and Eve were historical figures is an incorrect interpretation of Scripture. Dr. Grudem quotes Francis Collins who believes that Genesis 1-2 is best understood as poetry and allegory thus opening the door to the theistic evolution position. According to Collins: “Population geneticists…conclude that…our species…descended from a common set of founders, approximately 10,000 in number, who lived about 100,000 to 150,000 years ago.”[7] This thought is also expressed as the position of the BioLogos organization according to John M. Otis who says: “Genetic evidence shows that humans descended from a group of several thousand individuals who lived about 150,000 years ago.”[8] 

Thus we can see that if Adam and Eve were not historical figures, the idea that humans descended from hominids becomes a distinct possibility. Again, Otis shares the BioLogos position relating to eolutionists’ interpretation of scientific evidence: “The fossil record shows a gradual transition over 5 million years ago from chimpanzee-size creatures to hominids with larger brains who walked on two legs.”[9] Theistic Evolution advocates feel that once we separate Adam and Eve from their traditional historical setting, their case for evolution combined with their interpretations of scientific evidence makes their case indeed compelling.

Some Christians Claim That Since Evolution Is Taught as a Fact, God Must Have Used It.

At one time or another, most of us have been told that science has proven that evolution is a fact. We are told that we must view the Bible through the lens of science in order to get a correct understanding of what the biblical writer of Genesis intended us to understand about creation. Since many Christians accept that modern science must be true, they are left with the need to fit the “fact” of evolution into their theology. Theistic Evolutionist Karl Giberson uses this idea of “evolution being a scientific fact” to help us see why Christians need to embrace theistic evolution when he says: “The theory of evolution is a vast and complicated network of interlocking explanatory concepts tying together everything from the age of fossil bones to similarities between human and chimp DNA. There is, quite simply, a mountain of evidence from multiple sources supporting evolution.”[10]

Giberson goes on to add: “We must also take note of another major distinction between evolution and creation. The thousands of scientists who work within the broad paradigm of evolution – the geneticists, paleontologists, biogeographers, biologists, biochemists and so on – all agree on the broad outlines of the theory. They all agree that common ancestry is a fact.”[11] Armed with this “factual knowledge” of evolution, the logical conclusion for many Christians is that God must have used it to bring humanity into existence.

Fear of Being Viewed as “Anti-Intellectual” Causes Some to Opt for Theistic Evolution.

This can be a powerful reason many Christians have accepted theistic evolution. The group of people you are with can make a big difference in the belief system to which you adhere. Bert Thompson shares this insightful comment: “The influence of co-workers, friends, or peers also cannot be ruled out. Pressure to conform to the status quo is quite severe, especially in the scientific community.”[12] 

Thompson continues along these same lines by quoting Stanley Beck, of the American Lutheran Church: “To call himself reasonably well-educated and informed, a Christian can hardly afford not to believe in evolution. Evolution, including human evolution, is no longer in contention. Evolution has been demonstrated so thoroughly…even produced experimentally, that it has ceased to be a matter of opinion. And to announce that you do not believe in evolution is as irrational as to announce that you do not believe in electricity.”[13]

Sadly, many Christians decide on essential doctrines not by doing their own careful study of the Scriptures but by bowing down to what people in so-called authority positions happen to believe. And when these are scientists, the pressure to conform becomes that much more significant.

The day I gave my heart to Jesus on October 12, 1981, little could I have imagined that this decision of faith, over 41 years later, would prove, not only the best decision I ever made in life, but the most rational. For you see not only does Christianity promise us peace, joy, and meaning in this life, but a retirement package that is simply out of this world. In addition, only Christianity, of all the world religions, is based on an avalanche of evidences, which make it the most wonderful leap into the light imaginable.

While many believe that the Christian faith is a blind leap into the dark, I believe, just the opposite – that it is clearly a leap into the light and is based on a myriad of powerful lines of reason. For example, if  the religion of Christianity is to be believed it should be historically accurate in every way. And thanks to the scientific field of archaeology the Bible has been shown to be a first-rate history book in every way. The noted American biblical scholar, Millar Burrows, provides us with confidence here when he stated: “Archaeological work has unquestionably strengthened confidence in the reliability of the Scriptural record. More than one archaeologist has found his respect for the Bible increased by the experience of excavation in Palestine.”1

Now what about the scientific accuracy of the Bible. I contend that whenever the Bible speaks about science it is always accurate. Not only that but one of the greatest proofs that the Bible is a supernatural book is that there are many things written in the word of a God that were not discovered to be scientifically accurate until sometimes hundreds and even thousands of years later.

Another way in which the Christian faith shows itself to be a leap into the light is in the whole area of prophecy. Since prophecy is the declaration of future events such as no human wisdom or forecast is sufficient to make, if we could show that the Bible is accurate in its prophetic claims then this indeed would prove a great leap into the light. In fact, there is clearly no religion extant in the world today with one viable, believable, verifiable prophecy except Christianity. One of the greatest proofs of the truthfulness of the Bible is fulfilled prophecy. It is staggering in its amount and is extra-Biblical in its verification.

I like how apologist Charlie Campbell puts it: “We’re not asking people to believe what the Bible says about God, just ‘because it says so.’ No. We want people to believe the Bible because of the wealth of good evidence that has demonstrated the Bible to be trustworthy…hundreds of fulfilled prophecies…thousands of archaeological discoveries…numerous details in the Bible that have been corroborated by extrabiblical historical sources, and so on.”2

I like to tell people that when I gave my heart to Jesus, I didn’t throw away my mind, no, my mind, in fact, became illuminated. William Lane Craig summed it up this way: “The Christian faith does not call for us to put our minds on the shelf, to fly in the face of common sense and history, or to make a leap of faith into the dark. The rational person, fully apprised of the evidence, can confidently believe.”3

In the final analysis all truth seekers should be excited when they give their hearts and minds over to Christianity because no other belief system has so much evidence to back up its claims. For me it is so refreshing to know that when I gave my life over to Jesus I took a leap into the light.

In closing, I love how J. Warner Wallace shared the following observation: “I’m not a Christian because it ‘works’ for me. I had a life prior to Christianity that seemed to be working just fine, and my life as a Christian hasn’t always been easy. I’m a Christian because it is true. I’m a Christian because I want to live in a way that reflects the truth. I’m a Christian because my high regard for the truth leaves me no alternative.”4

In today’s Part II of this devotion, we will explore the lives of two more great Christian scientists and their love of the Lord and the Bible.

Lord Kelvin

Lord Kelvin (1824 – 1907) was elected at age twenty-two as Glasgow University’s youngest professor ever. Few know, however, that it was his habit to open every one of his lectures with prayer to God.

Most lists of the ten greatest scientists of all time would have to include William Thomson (Lord Kelvin). Born in 1824 in Belfast, Kelvin was a British mathematical physicist and engineer. Kelvin is world-renowned for helping to formulate in mathematical terms the first and second laws of thermodynamics, helped to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its modern form, and was instrumental in paving the way to lay the first transatlantic cable. His fame and accomplishments were so great that he became the first British scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords.

Kelvin strongly believed and followed the teachings of the Bible and found no conflict between science and the Holy Scriptures. In fact, Mulfinger writes: “Thomson said that people should not be so awed with the progress of science that they neglect to consider the impression that the study of nature ought to make on every mind. The more people study the wonderful works of God, he said, the more awe and veneration they should feel for its Author.”1

Kelvin strongly believed that as one studies science it should lead us closer to God. He once stated: “The more thoroughly I conduct scientific research, the more I believe that science excludes atheism.” He also added: “If you study science deep enough and long enough, it will force you to believe in God.”2

Near the end of his life Kelvin reflected on the awesome privilege of being able to use his scientific research to get a closer glimpse of God’s majesty in nature. To Kelvin science and creation were literally two sides of the same coin. He once commented: “The power of investigating the laws established by the Creator for maintaining the harmony and permanence of His works is the noblest privilege which He has granted to our intellectual state.”3

Johann Kepler

The name of Johann Kepler (1571 – 1630) may not be a household name to many of you, but in the world of astronomy his name is treated with reverence, since he is regarded as the father of modern astronomy. When Kepler was born the telescope had not yet been invented, (it wasn’t until 1609 that Galileo became the first person to point a telescope skyward) but that didn’t stop this remarkable scientific genius from searching the heavens and making one amazing discovery after another. Perhaps his greatest achievement was discovering the three laws of planetary motion and conclusively demonstrating the heliocentricity of our solar system. In addition, he is also considered the father of another scientific discipline – modern optics.

Sadly, many astronomers when they gaze into a brilliant star filled sky today don’t quite appreciate the divine Creator who placed all those stars in orbit as Kepler did 400 years ago. Many astronomers today are secular and don’t appreciate what we read in (Psalm 19:1): “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” To Kepler the heavens, he believed, displayed a wonderful sense of harmony and he felt that God had given him a rare talent to find in mathematical terms the harmony in creation he so often meditated on when looking up into the heavens.

Kepler was a strong Bible believing Christian and he was careful to give God all the glory through his magnificent discoveries. In fact, he once said: “Since we astronomers are priests of the highest God in regard to the book of nature, it befits us to be thoughtful, not of the glory of our minds, but rather, above all else, of the glory of God.”4

As one studies the early history of some of our greatest astronomers, they will see that many of them had a reverence for the stars in heaven and just knew that an all-powerful and loving God must have put them in place. It is well known that Kepler when asked, when he was doing his astronomical researches, what he was doing, said, he was merely “thinking God’s thoughts after Him.” Of all the many great scientists of the past 500 years few have been as careful to give God all the glory for their talents and discoveries as Johann Kepler.

Far from the Bible and science being enemies down through the centuries some of the greatest scientists of all time had a love affair with the Scriptures. For the following five great scientists the Bible became an indispensable resource in helping these men unlock many of the mysteries of the universe. For the skeptics, who believe that you can’t practice science and believe in the Bible, I ask them to consider the following:

Isaac Newton

Newton (1642 – 1727), perhaps the greatest scientist of all time, once said: “We account the Scriptures of God to be the most sublime philosophy. I find more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history whatsoever.”1

When all was said and done his discoveries are now legendary. Just one of his contributions to the world of science would have established Newton as a great scientist but the accumulation of his efforts leaves one breathless. According to Henry Morris: “Isaac Newton is famous for, among other things, his discovery of the law of universal gravitation, the formulation of the three laws of motion which make possible the discipline of dynamics and all its sub-divisions, and his development of the calculus into a comprehensive branch of mathematics, now a basic tool in every science. He anticipated the great law of energy conservation, developed the particle theory of light propagation, and as an astronomer constructed the first reflecting telescope.”2

As amazing as this may seem Newton devoted more of his time to studying the Bible and theology than to science and mathematics. His stepfather was a minister and Newton could often be found reading from his large library of religious texts. In addition, almost all of his fellow students and teachers from grammar school through college were impressed with Newton’s knowledge of the Bible. He believed that scientific investigation leads to a greater knowledge of God the Creator of the universe. In closing Newton once said: “I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by those who were inspired. I study the Bible daily.”3

Robert Boyle

Many of you may never have heard of Robert Boyle. But if I were to tell you that he is generally considered to be the father of modern chemistry, you might just be able to grasp his importance. Boyle (1627 – 1691), in addition to being a great scientist, was a strong believer in the Bible. His belief in the Word of God was so strong that he used a lot of his own money for Bible translation work. He apparently saw no conflict between being a man of science and a believer in the Holy Scriptures.

The following few quotes by this sincere Christian will help you realize how his love of science, God, and the Bible were intimately connected:4

“God would not have made the universe as it is unless He intended us to understand it.”

“As the moon, though darkened with spots, gives us a much greater light than the stars that sewn all-luminous, so do the Scriptures afford more light than the brightest human authors.”

“The gospel comprises indeed, and unfolds, the whole mystery of man’s redemption, as far forth, as it is necessary to be known for our salvation.”

“I use the Scriptures, not as an arsenal to be resorted to only for arms and weapons, but as a matchless temple, where I delight to be, to contemplate the beauty, the symmetry, and the magnificence of the structure, and to increase my awe, and excite my devotion to the Deity there preached and adored.”

Samuel Morse

The year was 1844 and Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791 – 1872) was about to make history. For you see Samuel Morse was about to attempt the impossible – to transmit an electronic message, by what would later be referred to as Morse code, a distance of 40 miles from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, Maryland. This new technology, the telegraph, a strange looking machine with attached copper wires, was all set to once again put the Bible on display, and oh incidentally prove a turning point in the advancement of human civilization.

Morse sat before his invention and ticked off its first message: “What hath God wrought!” This message was received seconds later by Morse’s assistant in Baltimore who promptly responded, a message back to Morse, to the amazement of all who were assembled to see if the telegraph would fail or became a part of communication history. It was only fitting that the first message sent on the telegraph was from the Bible – (Numbers 23:23) since Samuel Morse was a deeply committed Christian whose purpose in life was to honor the Lord in everything he did.

Morse was a world class inventor and internationally famous portrait painter but more than anything else he considered himself a humble servant of the Lord. When asked why he was selected to bring his monumental invention of the telegraph to the world he said: “I have made a valuable application of electricity not because I was superior to other men but solely because God, who meant it for mankind, must reveal it to someone and He was pleased to reveal it to me.”5

Just four years before his death in 1872 Morse reflected back on his career and forward to his future reward when he said: “The nearer I approach to the end of my pilgrimage, the clearer is the evidence of the divine origin of the Bible, the grandeur and sublimity of God’s remedy for fallen man are more appreciated, and the future is illumined with hope and joy.”6

In Part II of this devotion, we will look at the lives of two more great Christian scientists.

Back in 1955 a German journalist and amateur archaeologist named Werner Keller in his book, The Bible as History, made the following observation: “In view of the overwhelming mass of authentic and well-attested evidence now available, as I thought of the skeptical criticism which from the eighteenth century onward would fain have demolished the Bible altogether, there kept hammering on my brain this one sentence: ‘The Bible is right after all.’”1

In a book that I wrote back in 1990 called, The Challenge, I shared the following:

“Many critics of the Holy Scriptures consider the Bible to be a book full of errors in all fields (including historical matters), and nothing more than a book of fables, legends and stories written and rewritten many times. For a book that claims to be written under the inspiration of God, to contain many historical errors would certainly lessen its credibility. The exciting thing, however, is that our twentieth-century archaeologists have been able, through diligent scientific research and methods, to validate countless biblical narratives as irrefutable and historically accurate.

“One hundred years ago biblical critics were quick to level scathing attacks on the Bible. They stated that many of its accounts of people and places could only be found in the pages of the Bible itself and nowhere else. They contended that these accounts couldn’t be true because they couldn’t find any other historical information from any other sources to corroborate what the Bible said. Based on this line of reasoning these skeptics proudly boasted that the Bible was full of historical discrepancies. Since that time the archaeologist has entered the scene and has decisively put to rest the belief that the Bible is not a true book of history.”2

As I read about the archaeological proof for the existence of Joshua in John M. Monson’s essay, Enter Joshua: The “Mother of Current Debates” in Biblical Archaeology, I thought about the title of the book that contained this essay, Do Historical Matters Matter To Faith? and said to myself they certainly do. If there wasn’t a real Joshua then the implications are pretty straightforward as Monson states in the close of his essay: “If we dismiss the real Joshua ben-Nun and his times, what is to stop us from dismissing the later Joshua, Jesus of Nazareth?”3

While the Bible is first and foremost a book that gives us the spiritual guidance we need to function in life, it is also a book of accurate history of ancient times. It almost goes without saying that how can we trust the Bible, in many of its spiritual matters, which often can’t be scientifically verified, if it has historical errors, which thanks to modern scholarship, many of these historical matters we can now verify. To me the study of archaeology has done a great service to the Bible by demonstrating so many times that the Bible is indeed an accurate history of the ancient times. This gives me more confidence to trust the Bible in other areas (such as the spiritual ones) that can’t be verified either historically or scientifically. I can’t wait to see how archaeology will, in the future, continue to verify more and more biblical accounts; thus, increasing my faith in its veracity.

John Ambrose Fleming, considered by many to be the father of modern electronics, was also a strong Christian apologist, who once made the following astute comment: “We must not build on the sands of an uncertain and ever changing science…but upon the rock of inspired Scriptures.” This humble man of God and great scientist understood the danger of elevating science higher than its past history warrants. To prove his point let’s consider the following three true stories.

The great Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927) back in 1884 came up with a theory that turned out to be a revolutionary concept for its time. His theory of ionic dissociation helped to explain why a solution of sodium chloride (table salt) could transmit electric current.

His theory stated that sodium chloride broke up into two particles, a sodium and a chlorine, as soon as it was placed in solution. Since the solution didn’t contain metallic sodium and gaseous chlorine, Arrhenius reasoned that the sodium and chlorine must carry electric charges that allowed the electric current to flow through the solution.

His concept was not well received by his peers. In fact, when Arrhenius presented his ionic dissociation ideas as part of his Ph.D. thesis, he was given the lowest possible passing grade. However, only nineteen years later, in 1903, for the same thesis, he won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Quite a turn of events in such a short period of time.

Any schoolboy knows that the Earth revolves around the sun. But any learned man of science back in the 1400’s knew something quite different. Back then they all believed that our Earth was the center of the universe and that the sun moved around the Earth. In fact, if you disagreed with this scientific “fact” you ran the risk of being branded a heretic.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), a Polish astronomer, had a different idea. He believed that the sun, rather than the Earth, was the center of the universe. He stated that the earth and all the other planets moved through space and revolved around the sun. Copernicus was quite scared to publish this theory for fear he might be considered a heretic and be put to death. Strange how his theory, back then, could have cost him his life, while the prevailing theory of his time would, if you held it today, brand you as a candidate for the “loony bin.”

Another scientist that few of you may ever have heard about was the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865). The Bible says in (Proverbs 16:18): “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.” The truth of this statement is vividly shown in the following real-life historical tragedy.

Semmelweis was quite interested in a very puzzling disease called childbed fever. In his research, Semmelweis observed that many women bearing children in the hospitals of Vienna, where the best educated doctors could be found, died of very high fevers shortly after giving birth. He also observed that women bearing children at home, with the help of uneducated midwives, rarely died.

He determined that the doctors were the ones responsible for spreading the disease. It was common practice back then for a doctor to be working in the dissecting room and immediately afterward, move to the delivery room without carefully washing and cleaning his hands. Semmelweis, in 1847, began forcing the doctors under his charge to wash their hands in strong chemicals before touching any patients.

Many of these highly qualified doctors flatly refused to wash their hands and resented being thought the cause of spreading this disease. It became a question of pride. When the doctors washed their hands, the childbed fever rate went down. When they didn’t, needless lives were lost. This was truly a black day for modern medicine.

In the above three cases we see that science and “the truth” have often been strange bedfellows. In Arrhenius’ case we saw that his contemporaries were “confused” as to why certain solutions could conduct an electric current. With Copernicus his peers flatly “denied” that the Earth might not be the center of everything. And finally, the doctors during Semmelweis’ time knew that they were wrong, but their pride caused them to “hide” and suppress the truth.

Confused, denied, and hide – these are hardly words that describe what would come to mind if someone asked you what you thought of when you heard the word “science.” Now don’t get me wrong I am not down on science, but I have to concur with today’s opening quote from Fleming: “We must not build on the sands of an uncertain and ever changing science…but upon the rock of inspired Scriptures.” Scientific theories often change down through the centuries as we learn more about our incredibly complex universe.

Fortunately for us the Holy Bible has withstood the test of time, and not only hasn’t it changed one iota since it was completed 2,000 years ago but its message and teachings are timeless and totally up to date. God’s word should always be the standard and benchmark by which we measure science and not the other way around as many are trying to do today. As time marches forward scientific theories will continue to be modified and some even replaced, but rest assured the Holy Bible will continue to be the solid rock of timeless truth that it has always been.

Aldous Huxley said: “Modern science makes it impossible to believe in a personal God.” In our technological, space-age society many scientists believe that the Bible may be an inspirational book, but that it is full of errors when it speaks on scientific matters. Evolutionists, anthropologists and almost the entire field of science today strongly contend that they have finally been able to disprove much of the Bible.

May the words of the Psalmist present the challenge to the above contingent of our most prestigious scientific minds who hold to this belief today.

We read in (Psalm 19:7-9):

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.

God’s Word says that it is perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and true. We further read in (John 17:17): “…Thy word is truth.” God Himself, the Creator of the entire universe, is telling our modern men of science that His Word has no errors, including scientific ones. This is an amazing statement, but remember that the Bible is an amazing book. The stage is set. Let’s examine this most provocative area.

Any student of the history of science has to be impressed with the fact that this branch of knowledge has been incredibly wrong so often that one has to wonder if it really is science.

Down through the centuries so much of the discoveries of science have proven totally wrong, and many of its time-honored theories have been completely abandoned. Even hard facts (at least to their contemporaries) have been shown to be nothing more than hard fiction.

Today we treat our great scientists and men of medicine as if they were gods who have all the answers to life’s deep mysteries and problems. The reality of the situation is, however, that if we were to keep a scorecard over the past two millennia their marks would not pass the test of time.

Many of our greatest scientists have had the discoveries that made them famous proven totally wrong. Many others who proposed ideas and theories that would later change and revolutionize our world were, at the time they proposed them, thought of as crazy, foolish, and plain dead wrong. Strange how a field that prides itself on accuracy and wisdom can be in such a state of mass confusion and error.

The question of when does human life begin is no longer up for debate. Medical science has clearly shown and stated that human life begins not at birth, but at conception. Birth is indeed a special time but so is conception. At conception the foreknowledge of God becomes the reality of life. Not only that but at conception the fertilized egg cell while housed in the mother’s body is a unique and different entity unlike any other cell in a woman’s body. It is a separate life distinct from the life of the mother and with time and nutrition will grow into a precious human being to be cherished and loved.

If we listen to the medical experts we will find that they overwhelmingly support the viewpoint that human life begins at conception. To abort a baby any time after conception is to take, not a potential life, but a tiny human life. May the following 10 quotes taken from medical experts and medical textbooks give you a sampling of the consensus that exists in the medical profession that human life begins at conception.

On the contrary Christianity isn’t the enemy of science – it has been inspiring scientists for centuries. British scientist John Lennox states the case as follows: “Far from belief in God hindering science, it was the motor that drove it. Isaac Newton, when he discovered the law of gravitation, did not make the common mistake of saying: ‘now I have a law of gravity, I don’t need God.’ Instead, he wrote Principia Mathematica, the most famous book in the history of science, expressing the hope that it would persuade the thinking man to believe in a Creator.”1

Today in science classes across our country students are being taught that evolution, and not God, is the driving force that brought about mankind and that science doesn’t need God to function. I believe it is intellectually dishonest to tell young students that evolution is a scientific fact when there are thousands of scientists around the world today that believe evolution is impossible and that our universe is instead the product of an all-powerful Creator. I might add that it is also intellectually dishonest to not inform young people that many of the greatest scientists during the past 500 years such as Newton, Boyle, Kepler, Faraday, Kelvin, Maxwell and Dalton strongly believed in a universe that was designed by God.

While the Bible is not a science textbook it is always accurate when it talks on scientific matters. Many scientists down through the centuries have discovered scientific facts that the Bible shared hundreds and sometimes thousands of years before scientists discovered them. The scientists that I mentioned above were all strong Bible-believing Christians that believed that nature was designed for discovery and that the orderliness of nature was what made science possible.

John Lennox amplifies this point when he states: “Men became scientific because they expected law in nature and they expected law in nature because they believed in a lawgiver. It was this conviction that led Francis Bacon (1561–1626), regarded by many as the father of modern science, to teach that God has provided us with two books – the book of Nature and the Bible –”2

I believe that Lennox is spot on when he says that science was made possible because men expected law in nature and that was only possible if there was a supernatural lawgiver. And it was this fundamental understanding that our universe was the product of divine design that helped Christian scientists lead the way to making many monumental scientific discoveries down through the centuries.

It is imperative that our schools be a safe place for the free exchange of ideas. Take the evolution/creation debate for example. Proponents of evolution should have nothing to fear if they feel their theory makes the most sense. If our society wants to be a champion in the marketplace of ideas, we need to expose our young minds to competing ideas and allow them to draw their own conclusions. If we don’t, we will be doing them a great injustice by teaching them as “fact” (evolution) something that true science is not equipped to be in a position to prove.

I leave you with the following quote by John Lennox to ponder: “Of course, I reject atheism because I believe Christianity to be true. But I also reject it because I am a scientist. How could I be impressed with a worldview that undermines the very rationality we need to do science? Science and God mix very well. It is science and atheism that do not mix.”3
